Title: KC's Recommendation Thread
Post by: Rob on December 02, 2009, 06:15:06 PM
Figured it'd be a nice place to advertise some of your favourite music. Think people should only really put another video on if they actually watch the one that was posted before them.

This is Sonic Youth's cover of the Beatles song Within You, Without You

Ok this failed completely as a YouTube thread so instead I'll make it my recommendation thread. First of all was Sonic Youth and I know some of you are all ready aware of them, brilliant cover though.

Next is a singer that I've loved for a couple of years now and I don't even know why. I think it might just be his pleasant sounding voice, very relaxing I think. This is a song called All My Days which came out a while ago on an album that had a lot of music heavily featured on some TV shows, especially Scrubs, House and The OC.

I like Sonic Youth. A lot.

Hell to the yes. SY have been one of my top listened to artists for a couple of years now because I think there's so much diversity between their older stuff and it changed right up until Rather Ripped, which is actually second I feel to Daydream Nation. Obviously their new album goes back to the beginning but this time as grown up's...

Next artist I'd like to recommend is another experimental band. They're called Slowdive and they're sorta a heavy dream/pop band. Really relaxing music. I love to listen to this music because it's really something very different to conventional music genre's which seem to dominate people's life's, really.

Also, I don't know how frequently I'll post to this, whenever I feel like you people need to share with me the geniuses that make the music I love.

Another noise band... Deerhoof. Enjoy. I've always enjoyed them thoroughly. Pretty much like Deerhunter, Pavement and Low.

Post by: Tim-Æ on December 27, 2009, 10:11:40 PM
OMG, can we be best friends?

I do enjoy some Deerhoof, though more for the guitar work, the vocals are slightly irritating to me. The first track on "offend maggie" is my favorite, it has such a great riff to it. Song's called "The Tears and Music of Love."

If you dig this stuff KC, check out All the Saints. Not..."All Saints."

That was great! I thoroughly enjoyed it from the very beginning!

The Local Natives.

Unfortunately for them they came in after Fleet Foxes, but I think they're just as good. Obviously they sound very similar. Spotify have been ranting on about them for ages now...

I think this song is fantastic though.

These guys are still relatively new, but they've gotten me hooked. Three vocalists (yes, you read that right) each with their own distinctive style meshed into a package of pure melodic power.

Say hello to Amaranthe.

^ first of all, that music is nothing like what is in this thread. If you're going to make suggestions, try to make them at least similar to what KC's going for. That's what the point of the thread is.

Now....Local Natives....Old NEWS! Downloaded this baby about a month ago and love it. Sun Hands is great. They have a Fleet Foxes meet Arcade Fire feel to them, and I'll be reviewing the whole album once its released officially in the US.

I don't mind music being recommended in my thread but its really not the kind of music I like. Sounds heavy metal on fast forward though. If you wanna recommend music to me I'm into indie, alternative rock, pop, hip hop and other sub-genres of those genres (there's too many to list). I've basically put up everything that's different to one another that I like...

KC, you like Liars?

new album leaked, its called "Sisterworld." Saw them open for Radiohead in 2008.
Title: Re: KC's Recommendation Thread
Post by: Rob on January 09, 2010, 02:50:56 PM
Never replied to this. But I do like Liars, I've given them a couple of plays recently. Definitely a band I could like based on the fact I love indie music, (I consider Indie music to be a style of music that is individual to that artist/band)

Next recommendation is Counting Crows. Not their newer stuff. In fact, I hate everything that isn't on their debut album August and Everything After. That album is easily in my top 10 ever, so emotive.

This is probably the best song off the album. Round Here. It's always a favourite of their live performances and they never play it the same way twice. Truly awe-inspiring how much emotion goes into it. This performance is off the Howard Stern Show and he even said himself that it's one of the best performances he's ever seen. I highly recommend the version from MTV's 10-Spot.

Big recommendation for 2010. I think this young girl is going to EXPLODE onto the scene any day now. I first heard Obsessions a long while ago, around the same time I found Florence + The Machine - Kiss With A Fist. I absolutely adore this song.

Broken Records - A Promise.

Very different band from Scotland.

Looks like I was right about Marina and the Diamonds. Her debut album The Family Jewels has entered the UK albums chart at Number 5 and the Irish Albums chart at no 9. Most reviews are fairly positive. Shamefully, NME gave it 9/10 and I feel sick to my stomach that I'm agreeing with them. The Independent, who are exactly as the title says are independent, as their views are often really different on music, gave her 1* out of 5. I still think she's going to explode if Obsessions or I'm Not A Robot get released. She got pretty great attention by NME's awards by singing with Biffy Clyro (bleurgh).

Ages since my last recommendation. Havent really been listening to new music. Would be stupid for me to recommend Fleetwood Mac or Nick Drake.

This is a band I have instantly fallen in love with, though. Their album, Just Do It, is probably my favourite this year so far. It's perfectly put together and there's not a song on the album that sounds wrong or out of place.

The band is called Elias and the Wizzkids and they're from Sweden. Their sound is just a bubbly pop rock sort of sound. Intriguing though.

Almost a month since I recommended anything,

Here is My Bloody Valentine with a live version of To Here Knows Why. Beware, they are shoegaze, you may not like them. I happen to love them, especially after a few herbal cigarettes... Very therapeutic and one of the bands I associate with my music taste maturing in the last 5 years.

You may wanna check out Male Bonding, KC. Really good lofi kinda shoegazing punk. digging it.

Can't get enough of this song. I didn't care for Wavves last year when I first heard them, but this song is fucking tits.

I do like the Waves song a lot. Not too sure about Male Bonding, but maybe they need a few listens before they grow on me.

Another recommendation, coming quickly now.

Honestly, I thought I had mentioned Tunng all ready in this. But I see their album ...And Then We Saw Land as one of the best this year. Such an interesting and wonderfully melodic folk band, really catchy music and the kind of lyrics you really need from folk bands. No silly shit like the Hold Steady. Just very intelligent music, with really pleasant guitar playing, which has become somewhat a lost cause in a lot of the generic folk music lately.

Honestly, check them out, if you've got an ear for catchy music, you'll love Tunng.

Actually digging Surfer Blood - Floating Vibes at the moment. The riff's pretty interesting, loving it.

Wow,

Dinosaur Jr! Haven't really listened to them in ages. I love coming back to music like this, especially with guitar riff's like Dinosaur Jr. J. Mascis is actually a genius and this music was another one of the bands that got me through a tough period. Fortunately now I can listen to this music and look back fondly. It may sound like garbage with peculiar placement of instruments and pretty shocking vocals, but trust me it grows on you. DinoJr are one of the forefront bands of the experimental rock era.

Five reasons Pavement rules

1. Gold Soundz
2. Elevate Me later
3. Stereo
4. Cut Your Hair
5. Range Life

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain = amazing

I'm seeing them on September 11th.

You're an extremely lucky little bitch :P

Wowee Zowee is my most listened to album at the moment, it's indie rock at it's absolute best. If anyone gets the chance to go and see Pavement live, do it. It will be the experience of a lifetime.

It's been a long time since I've updated this... But here are a few videos I've been loving lately.

Some Tim would have spoken about before, others that I've just been listening to.

Two new songs and a classic.

I'd HIGHLY recommend Broken Social Scene's new album, I rate it as the best of the year so far.

And The Strokes, of course...

Title: Re: KC's Recommendation Thread

Gotta love Imogen Heap!

Okkervil River are a hugely underrated indie band for quite some time now. I think anyone that likes the likes of Pavement, Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene should check these out

Title: Re: KC's Recommendation Thread

Very strange that I'm going to add this song considering I posted The Strokes only a few months ago, but their new single came out last week and I can't get enough of it. It's really brilliant, and I'm seriously looking forward to their new album with this;

And this one's more specifically for JDM, but for anyone thats loving Mumford and Sons or Laura Marling the last year or so, you have to check out Johnny Flynn. He's a wonderful writer, and his music is pretty catchy.

Title: Re: KC's Recommendation Thread

Almost forgot how much I loved Ben Folds Five, but they were pretty awesome! Posted this on my 30 day song challenge as day 25's song that makes you laugh. And with a chorus of "Give me my money back, you bitch" you can't go wrong.

Tap footing acoustic music at it's finest.

It was either going to be that or Belle and Sebastian who are another band that I just love and don't listen to enough. Some of their songs are really touching with really witty lyrics. Sometimes pretty hard to understand but if you can hear the lyrics to The State I Am In, you will be laughing. The guy kicks the crutch away from his crippled friend. That's funny.. Especially in serious music.

Eight days between updates! What the fuck!?!?!?!?

Two of my favourite all time Britpop songs, first is Ocean Colour Scene with The Day We Caught The Train. Instantly recognisable and a HUGE 90s CHOON. And if you can spot on the old piano, Mr. Modfather, Paul Weller is there

And you can't talk about Paul Weller without mentioning his solo work. I do love what he's done since The Jam, pretty much everything, all the different genre's he's crossed, but Studio 150 is a wonderful album and I suggest you all go and listen to it. Great cover album. This song was released the same year as the previous and a host of other Britpop wonder-tunes. So go check out 1995.

Apparently I can't post any youtube videos in this anymore? And I've not recommended anything for 8 months!

Got a few here now;

This is tUnE-yArDs a indie, psychedelic pop solo artist, really catchy, awesome stuff. Catch her latest album out, it's like cocaine or something.

Not really a recommendation as it is a reminder for people to go and listen to Bon Iver's latest album. If you liked Bon Iver's first album then prepare to LOVE this one and if you didn't, well... you'll still fucking love it. Total poetry and absolutely beautiful music.

Those are my two favourite albums from the last year or so, but I do recommend people go and check out Drake's latest album, Schoolboy Q (rapper), Fucked Up (punk) and Real Estate (indie), some really good, interesting music in the last year.

I've listened to this one several hundred times over the last few years (not because PS. I Love You, Stewart Lee or the Magners advert...) It's just an awesome song that makes me feel good. Such a favourite in fact at one of my local haunts the landlord ALWAYS queues it up for me, and it's amazing because the whole pub always end up dancing. Sometimes I get him to play it 2 or 3 times, but he does argue back now...

I've gone weeks of listening to basically no music at all.... It has to change.

I fully expect to be called a hipster fuck with these songs.

The Glitch Mob ft. Sister Crayon - Beauty of the Unhidden Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nORTtFMKdqU#ws)

The Electric Youth track is a great one. Have you seen the movie Drive, starring Ryan Gosling? If not, you should. It has tunes galore in it. One of my favourite sound tracks.

Yeah I saw it a while ago by mistake on Netflix and loved it. Then I was staying in a Premier Inn and they played that song every night at dinner and I couldn't work out how I knew it... Had to Shazam it

SO happy to finally have new Damien Rice music... 8 years since his last album. Hard to believe I went to see him live but couldn't legally drink and EFK was just a pipe-dream for Sam and Ian. Really delighted to finally have Damien Rice music in my 20s

I'm seriously recommending Michael Kiwanuka's latest album Love & Hate.

It's a wonderful blend of soul, rhythm and blues and acoustic pop music that is really damn addictive. It's the kind of wonderful album that is worth me posting in this thread for the first time in nearly 2 years.

I'm going to try catching up on this thread from the beginning. I wasn't really trying much new stuff a few years ago, nor even listening to the radio. I wasn't paying much attention to music in general.

Scrolling back, the songs I actually recognize in this thread are ones that I like, so it's reasonable to assume I'll like more.

Lately I've gotten very much into the music of Michael Franti and Spearhead. I'm not really good at genres but I guess it's a reggae/hip-hop/pop fusion. Most importantly it's so upbeat, the lyrics and the music that it seldom fails to actually make me smile and lighten my mood. He genuinely comes across as a really great person behind the artist.

But anyway, yeah, that Kiwanuka song is really catchy. Would require me to be in a certain mood to deliberately seek it out, but if it came on Pandora or whatever, I would definitely let it play.
