Seeing as everyone else is doing it, here's my first post on MFX Ramblings:

http://www.marksforxcellence.com/?p=818

It's about fake outrage, finding offence when there's none to be found and other such fun stuff!

Check it out, leave a comment on the site if you'd like.

It's an interesting topic, Sambo, and a pretty frustrating one too, at times. I think to a certain extent, there really is a subset of people who are so hung up on words and language that they co-opt the complaining from others. Sometimes, someone could be very well-meaning and just have a slip of the tongue or a derp moment and say the wrong thing.

However, it's also really difficult sometimes when you have to bear in mind that there are certain words that just are a no fly zone. In addition to that, having, for example, a friend who says it's cool for you to use 'f*g' -around them-, does not mean it's therefore permission to use it at any and all times. There's power in words (anybody who says 'sticks and stones' is full on talking out of their arse), and that makes it really important to take a good hard look at what's acceptable and isn't. I've had a few friends who use the word 'gay' negatively all the time, and as someone who identifies as generally queer, I was constantly reminding them not to say that, because it bothered me to have part of my identity equated to 'bad'.

Of course this is coming from someone with an absolutely filthy mouth who swears all the freaking time, but I don't feel cursing and specifically-targeted language are quite the same thing. A bit of a ramble overall from me, but an interesting topic that did make me think a bit.  :)

(As a slight PS thing, I dislike when people complain about in-groups using words (like the n-word, or f*g, or dy*e) to refer to themselves or one another, because that's what reclaiming a word is. It's taking it for your own to remove the power from others using it insultingly. That, however, is a bit of a tangent.)

That's totally what happened to old Benedict.  If you watch the interview, he's actually trying to find a collective word to use, and picks 'coloured' because he's trying to NOT be offensive. Which people who aren't black, then found offensive!!  It's insane.  Like some kind of verbal trap door that you don't fall through, but instead are shoved down by someone looking to score a moral point off you!  I just don't get it.

The other point is how what's acceptable changes over time.  I mean attitudes in general have evolved (not everywhere with everyone) over time and it's causing a lot of the older generation to end up getting hung in the court of public opinion.

Like when they asked that guy from one of that Duck Dynasty reality show what he thought about gay marriage.  He's a 70 year old, swamp dwelling hillbilly - of course he's going to have a view of gay marriage that's out of line with modern society.  So you ask him his opinion, he gives it, and then they slaughter him for it.  Knowing full well what he's going to say.  It's the 'gotcha' thing again - celebrating catching people out by the words they use.

It's all about intention and context for me and so many social and media based commentators are ignoring that and then the whole issue of equality or reasonable behaviour is lost under a shit storm of hype and faux out rage! Which totally deflects from the real issue!!  Drives me nuts!

Cheers for the comment, really appreciate you taking the time to read.  Don't forget, you can also comment on the MFX site itself, helps us get more eyes on the blogs!

It is unfortunate when people get raked over hot coals (though, I expressed my thoughts on the duck dynasty thing at length back when it was a topic on the boards, and I don't want to dig that back up again, cause I got heated about it). I've caught myself several times in the past saying some pretty offensive stuff that's made me, in retrospect, go 'whooops I should not have said that.' - however, I'm not saying things in the public eye, so it's easy for me to immediately hold up a hand and go 'yeah that was off colour, my bad'.

I think that celebrity culture means that public figures get hyper analysed for anything they say. Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes that means that things get taken way out of context

Well actually Duckman he isn't a 70 year old swamp dwelling hillbilly, he just plays one on TV. The Robinson family are actually Yuppies here is what the guys from Duck Dynasty really looked like before the show..

But yeah, I agree about the whole fake outrage crap. I blame it on our overly PC society we live in, I once worked in a housing facility for the handicapped and we couldn't use any of the following terms.. Handicapped, Handicappable, Mentally challenged, slow, restricted, limited, held back, and many others that I can't recall but basically we couldn't use any term that can be considered negative nor could we call them patients or residents instead as "consumers"..I mean I get retarded since that has gone from it's original meaning "to hold back or hinder" to one that can be considered derogatory fine but the others wtf?

It seems in our attempts to stop being degrading assholes we as a society have swung to far in the opposite direction and now are overly PC pricks. Which itself has caused a backlash of it's own where people are now flooding the internet to be classic degrading assholes.

Ok, I am going back a few years, but this was classed as offensive

QuoteA warning that the nursery rhyme Baa Baa Black Sheep should not be taught in schools because it is "racially offensive" has been scrapped.

The guidelines by education chiefs at Birmingham City Council were dropped after black parents condemned the advice as ridiculous.

Schools had been told that the old rhyme was negative and could cause offence

And that was nursery school children.  So where is the line?

Its the online media that one day will condemn something and then condemn something the next.

I'd encourage more people to meet up with their online mates.

This past summer I went down to North Carolina to visit The Commune, which is basically a bunch of people on mafiascum (another site I frequent) realized they all lived near each other and over the years grouped up. I stayed with them for a weekend and it was one of the best things I've ever done. I never met any of them in real life up to that point but we got along instantly and it was really awesome.
