You should read up on 'Right to Work' Laws some time.

Right to work laws just say "you have a right to work without being forced to join a union".  They don't cover contracts for employment or shit like that.

Man, I'm so glad I don't work in that sector.  Or America to be honest.

The level of employment rights you guys have, compared to us, is almost zero - from what you're saying and the attitudes people have to raising even the slightest concern or question about their job or working conditions.

Every job I've ever had, from the age of 14 onwards, has had a contract and has been protected by employment legislation. 

Mind you, I did watch Last Week Tonight a couple of weeks back and they were doing a bit on how only the States and Papa New Guinea don't give women paid maternity leave and some of the horror stories they had about women giving birth on a Sunday and being forced back to work the following Wednesday because they couldn't afford not to, was heartbreaking.  Over here women get 52 weeks maternity leave at 90% of the usual wage and are still entitled to pay rises and other benefits. 

It's actually pretty sad to see the way employers treat you guys in the US and also how little statutory legal protection you seem to have.  Or maybe it's just the industries you guys work in, but it seems so unfair.

You want really fucked up. Some states paying you way less than minimum of your a waiter/waitress cause your tips should compensate you enough to make it like minimum. Some states even make you pay taxes on the tips you "should" receive oh but you also have to make sure to tip out the busboys out of what you should have got but they get full minimum wage and don't have to report their tips

We had something similar to that here in Canada. My last job we got tips and we were "supposed" to claim our tips and though we made minimum wage, the raises were trash (even for min. wage job standards here in Canada). I was there over 3 years and my base pay was $10.80 and min. wage currently is $10.60).

We didn't get raises because our employer considered our tips part of the wage. I'm not complaining, it could have been way worse and it is min. wage job to your room to bitch about compensation is limited, but still companies do get away with a lot of shit like that.

I started out making 7.25 at my last job. After 5 years of sweat and tears and putting my all into that company, working supervisor roles without the title or pay, etc. etc. ... They finally decided to give me $8 a month before I quit. This was all while going to high school and college.

As a salaried employee you are considered exempt from being paid for overtime.  The expectation is that if you're salaried that it's an unwritten rule that you work over if you need/have to because something needs to get done, not because you expect to be paid or given recognition for it.

And this is why when the mere mention of moving from hourly to salary was made to me at my job, I declined.  I'm almost certain the topic will come up again though, especially now that I basically went up from assistant manager to the full on store manager (I was doing all that that entails already anyway just didn't have the title bump).
