My current mix is getting stale and my list of favorite underground bands is getting shorter as they simply fade away without putting out anything new.

So... Recommend something I've likely not heard before. I have a wide taste in music so don't be afraid to mention something out of the ordinary.

I like Norah Jones, A Fine Frenzy, The White Stripes, The Ramones and a load of heavier stuff I'm sure none of you have heard of.

Love industrial, shoegazer, post-hardcore, screemo, rapcore.

Also... I normally don't like male singers. There are exceptions, but female vocalists is a big plus.

Rob

Asobi Seksu - A shoegaze band with a female vocalist. Very good from the small amount I've heard. I keep meaning to get more into them myself to be honest.

Another few almost shoegaze bands. I like to call them noise-pop to be honest.

Slowdive
Lush
Ride
Jesus and Mary Chain
Pavement

Why not take a trip into the past?

Blow the dust off your old Zeppelin albums? Dig through your Creedence tapes? Thats what I do, I start going through the classics, try to find something that sparks a little appreciation.

Haha, I just listened to like 5 or 6 zeppelin albums.

Rebel Child

CCR for the friggin' win!

I also suggest: Doobie Brothers

For female singers: Adele and Mirah are good ones that Mr. Lemontree got me hooked on.

I also suggest since you like Norah Jones that maybe John Mayer may be something that you'd be interested in.

Excaligore

Well, I know for a fact you would HATE my taste in music, Jesse. However, I have to whore my music wherever there's a chance since it's mostly stuff that sorely misses the appreciation it deserves.

Ever hear of Thinking Plague? I don't know, it has female vocals and the music itself is absolutely ingenious, and quite unique. Came out in the 80s and was massively ahead of it's time. It's very very subtle, though. Worlds different than anything you listed but if you're looking for something different it's a good place to look.

Spinnerette is a great band that I got into this past year. They were put together by former Distillers frontwoman Brody Dalle, and they create a great mix of rock, punk, electro and whatever else they want to do. You might also like The Distillers, who played much more straightforward punk and hardcore.

I finally picked up the debut album by Glasvegas, who are an amazing Scottish band. They've got a great sound that is part shoegaze, part 50's doo wop, and a whole lot of awesome.

And, of course, Fugazi are amazing post-hardcore. I recently heard that they're recording a new album, which is brilliant.

Tim-Æ

well....now the tables have turned.

It's no secret Jesse, you are my sworn enemy in the movie forum. But I've decided to cut you a "break" given that you like The White Stripes. So while your movie taste sucks worse than a Georgie Nickles RP, I'll throw out 10 bands that I think (given your favorites listed) you may at least 20% enjoy. In no particular order.

1. Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - Punk rock band, given that you like the Ramones, there's no excessive political undertones (rhyme). Poppy at times, but their older stuff is more steeped in punk than pop. I have every single EP, album, and single by the band, and I've seen them live. Ted Leo is the brainchild obviously, and he's got a vast knowledge of influences ranging from some of the stuff you've mentioned, to even more obscure punk. For starters, I'd say you catch the following songs on youtube "Bomb.Repeat.Bomb" - from the newest record (2007), a bit of a harder edged punk song slightly political so you may not like it, but its edgy and I dig it. Also check out "Colleen" just the opposite of the last one. "Timorous Me" and "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone?" and "Army Bound," should give you a nice sample of what Teddy can do.

2. The xx - you mentioned that you like chick singers a lot, I'm just the opposite. It has to be a certain pitch, and The xx do it perfectly in my head. Two singers, one male, one female, but the chick is the more dominant singer. More beat influenced, very stripped down, and I'd consider it a back ground record more. Their video for "Basic Space" is friggin tight as hell. I also enjoy "Crystalized" and "Islands." One of the best albums of 2009, I started a thread about them somewhere in August (it was ignored though).

3. Deerhunter - only b/c of your reference to shoegaze. In my opinion, "Microcastle" their 2008 album is quite possibly one of the greatest records produced in the last 10 years. It was my number one pick of 2008. Bradford Cox is a wimpy little bitch, but damnit he creates luscious atmosphere in songs like "Never Stops" and then flips it and creates jangle pop in "Strange Lights" that hasn't been seen since the Beatles.

4. Broken Social Scene - Multi instrumental band, there's like 20 people in this band, all putting together complex and frighteningly amazing albums like the top 10 album of all time (for me) "You Forgot It In People." I recommend this due to your enjoyment of female singers, because there's a lot of different stuff going on here. A lot of people don't realize this but Feist got her start in BBS. Listen to "Almost Crimes" and "Stars and Sons" which are off of their best record.

5. the Dirty Projectors - if you hung around my music scene, you'd probably be sick of this band as every indie prick LOVES them. Why? Because their weird and lovable at the same time. "Bitte Orca" is their 2009 album and it'll be on a lot of best of the year lists soon. For the chick loving in you, I'd say "Stillness is the Move" could be your anthem, but I prefer "Cannibal Resource." Give 'em both a listen and see what you think.

6. fun. - Just found these guys, and really they should be making truckloads of cash. Multi-instrumental section, one predominant male vocalist, but there's some nice female backing. Falls somewhere up there with Sufjan Stevens. I'd recommend "Be Calm" and "Benson Hedges," to get an idea of what they sound like.

7. Katzenjammer - Saw these chicks at Bonnaroo and they rocked the shit out of me. Sort of a jam band, with all four of them lending vocals and playing different instruments. Good luck finding it, took me a long time to find their album, but I'd check out their myspace to get a taste. "A Bar in Amsterdam" rocked the crowd at Roo.

8. Liars - Opened for Radiohead, but don't be confused they sound nothing like them. More shoegaze, kind of industrial, but I'd recommend you listen to "Houseclouds" from their 2007 self titled album.

9. Phoenix - Super pop band, you've heard a lot of their songs on TV already if you've ever seen a car commercial in 2009. "lisztomania" and "1901." It'll be in my top 20 albums of the year definitely.

10. White Rabbits - Saw their set briefly at Bonnaroo, they mix a good combo of garage rock/blues rock, but leaning more on the latter with clear vocals and constant rhyming. I'd suggest you check out the song "Percussion Gun."

If you ask me nicely, after listening to them and hearing something you like, I may be coerced into zipping a folder of songs for you.

And just for the hell of it...the following are always great.

Japandroids, Grizzly Bear, Girls, Sonic Youth, M83, The New Pornographers, the Notwist, Women, Vampire Weekend, Surfer Blood, The Strokes, the Flaming Lips, the Black Keys, and Built to Spill.

Zombie Gunn

Awesome guys, got me a good list to check myspace profiles of.

Zombie Gunn

Thanks for tons of new music, people.  Been filling my playlist lately.  Here's another request.  Anybody know anything that would appeal to my creepy industrial side?  My favorite band of this genre is Android Lust as seen here.

Something along the same lines would be great.

Tim-Æ

Have you ever listened to the Notwist?

and I'm sure you've heard of Vast. When I used to listen to some industrial this was one of the bands I was fond of.

And while they aren't necessarily "industrial" they opened for the Nine Inch Nails who are the epitome of industrial, Deerhunter can be pretty wicked, just saying!

Sgt. Josh Underpants

Agreed. To add a few more in there, I'd say Yo La Tengo, Dinosaur Jr and Sparklehorse.
