This is a quote from a book I'm reading. Life After Doomsday, written by Bruce Clayton in 1980.

Quoteours is not the first energy crisis. There was a previous one in Britain in the sixteenth century. At that time, wood was the main fuel for domestic and industrial uses as well as the primary source of building material. By the seventeenth century, the English forests had depleted... Over the space of a century and a half, a shift from wood to coal gradually took place, an event which eventually led to the beginning of the industrial revolution.

This got me thinking. First, that if we have to wait 150 years before we can ween ourselves off of oil, we're in for some serious trouble.

Second, the change led to a complete change in society. Everything we know today was catapulted forward at tremendous speed due to the necessity of coal. Now, here we are in the middle of the digital revolution. What tremendous leaps will we be taking next?

With the change in how we power our vehicles and homes, how will that new technology change the future?
