Let's Look At: La Mulana 2!

the sequel to the remake of La-mulana(the orginal La-mulana was a japanese freeware project done as a love letter to the MSX home computer and was done in the graphical and musical style of games of that system and was latter remade with more modern graphics and soundtrack for the Wii and PC)  has reached it's Kickstarter goal of 200,000 last night and still has 5 days to go in the campaign. If you don't know what La-Mulana is it's a 2d exploration based action platformer game, also known as a Metroidvania, where you took on the role of a action hero type archaeologist in the vain of Indiana Jones named Lamenza Kosugi who set off to explore the ruins of La-Mulana which is said to have been the cradle where all life and civilization sprouted from in a attempt to beat his father to the treasure and soon finds that there is more to the ruins that a great treasure and that the legends of the ruins being the cradle of all civilization and life that surround it may actually be true.

The sequel is set to take place 7 years after the first, with you taking on the role of  Lumisa Kosugi a relation of the first game's protagonist who returns to the ruins of La-mulana(which collapsed at the end of the first game) after words reaches the families archaeology society that monsters and such have been seen around the remains of La-mulana and she soon finds a forgotten second set of ruins which houses the Yggdrasil tree which is the tree of life in Norse Mythology. Which seems to be the theme in LA-Mulana 2, where as the first game the ruins was a mix of various cultures such as The temple of the Sun being Egyptian in theme, The Spring the in Sky being a mix of Celt and Sumerian themes, and so on, this time the new ruins seem to follow a Norse theme with some of the revelead areas being the roots of the Yggdrasil tree, the Realm of Fairies/Alfheim, Immortal Battlefield/Midgard,Blazing Frost Canopy/Muspellheim.

In honor of reaching it's kickstarter goal the creators of La-mulana released the Demo they made for TGS(The Tokyo Games Show) last year and released it for people to try out you can nab it and give it a go here: http://www.playism-games.com/games/lamulana2/

I won't lie the original version and remakes of La-mulana are great metroidvania's but dear god are they hard, I mean Dark Souls level hard and having played the demo of the sequel it's not really any easier in the difficulty department, just less cryptic in the hints to the puzzles in the ruins which seems to be no less death trap laden.

Speaking of which if you want to check out the first game you can grab the original MSX styled freeware version here:
https://archive.org/details/La-Mulana
keep in mind the game is in Japanese so you will have to apply the english patch to it and it doesn't play well with Windows 7, it runs but you will get corrupted colours so you have to have a window open in the background usually the windows display settings menu will do the trick or make a batch file that kills explorer, boot the game up and then relaunches explorer after exiting the game.

Or you can pick up the remake on Steam or DRM free on GOG: Steam - http://store.steampowered.com/app/230700/?snr=1_7_15__13
