It isn't really spoiling to give backstory the movie barely mentions.

One of the great things about the Green Lantern comic is all the Lanterns who fill out the panels (did you know there are 3600 members in the Corps?) Here's some insider knowledge on a few cool characters who show up in the new flick, but don't get much back story on-screen:

Steel Centurion - Stel is a robot Green Lantern, briefly glimpsed on Oa, who has a penchant for dying and rebuilding himself. Not to be confused with fellow DC hero Steel, played onscreen by Shaquille O'Neal in a movie that self-destructed.

Pie Guy - Thomas Kalmaku (Taika Waititi) is Hal Jordan's best friend. In the comics and the film, he's of Inuit heritage. Not up on your National Geographic? That means he's an Eskimo. For years he was known as Pieface (after Eskimo Pies) in the comics...until DC realized that wasn't very nice.

Hawk Hatin' - Isamot Kol, depicted in the movie as a quadruped who joins an early battle, is more bipedal in print. There, he's a lizard-man from Thanagar, which is also home to Hawkman, who will never, ever get his own movie.

Hammond Cheese - In the film, creepy Hector Hammond, possessed by the evil Parallax, wants to kill his movie dad, Senator Hammond (Tim Robbins). Could this be a deep-inside film nerd joke? 1974's The Parallax View focuses on a character who is framed for the murder of a Senator Hammond.

Green Lantern lights up screens today. Join the Corps. See the universe!
