Ah... I thought the purpose of leaving players unprotected was to fill out the expansion draft.

It is, but a player that is on a one year deal and gets stolen from your team... is more or less a free agent for S14. If you don't resign him and nobody steals him, he goes into the expansion draft (if there is one) or into the free agent pool.

Thankfully, he wasn't part of my plans for next season. I am assuming now that I cannot have him as one of my unprotected players though? That screws things up a little.

You have to think of it in terms of how many players you can protect, not how many players to 'have to' leave unprotected.

You can protect up to 6 players. That's all you have to worry about. 6 players you want to keep - you don't want to keep Lucic, therefore don't protect him. That means there's a maximum of one other player you can't protect.
