Title: Want to write for MFX?
Post by: Duckman on January 24, 2015, 05:48:06 AM
As we announced on MFX111, we're launching MFX blogs on our site.

Simple premise: write what you want, when you want and we'll promote them through MFX.

There's no deadlines and no fixed schedule.  You got something on your mind you want to share with the world?  Then MFX is the place to do it.

Get all the details here:

http://www.marksforxcellence.com/?page_id=559 (http://www.marksforxcellence.com/?page_id=559)

Thanks to those of you who have already been in touch, and to the guys who PMed me about this, follow the link and send me the details so I can keep track and get everyone set up!

Cheers,
Duckman

As soon as I can think of a name for my musings (Which'll cover wrestling, rugby and probably any random shit I can think of. Online gaming too probably.).

Any ideas are welcome :D

Welcome to the dark side of incredibly poor puns based on Friend of the Show nicknames...I've also got "The (Adam) Wrong Stuff", "The Bad News with Brown", and "The Waiting Room with Dr Death" waiting in the wings...

Taking mine from the Tumblr I kinda gave up up apart from brief spurts.... Lowering the Tone.

Like Bam Bam's, the previous incarnation was about any old crap, but with the odd picturespam, this one will not have the picturespam.

Details being sent.

Awesome stuff Tone!

I take it have to stick with Layin' The Quackdown for the title of my blog?  It is pretty awesome after all. :)

The level of interest for this is crazy!  We're probably looking at 10 blogs to kick us off, with loads of different ideas for them.  Great stuff folks.  Anyone else feels like getting on this bandwagon, now is the time!

I've got one I have wanted to do for a while now, the premise is REALLY silly.

Essentially it'd be a video game blog, but I'd write about old videogames as if they were new videogames and I'm nowhere near caught up with the current trends in gaming.

I've got no name for it, and I don't even know if it would go over well, but that's the idea.

Do it man! I'm sure our puntastic fellows here can come up with a suitably punny name!

I'd be down.  Like I said, its nothing serious just something to read and get a chuckle or two.  The first couple I'd do would be like Super Mario Bros or Duck Hunt or something.  NES era.

Such a great response to this!  We're looking at probably 12-15 blogs to kick us off!  That's so great - thank you for your interest guys.

Alex K is working away behind the scenes to get everyone set up with user accounts and also banners for your blog.  So if you've got any special requests for the banner, drop Alex a PM here.

Hopefully we'll have the blogs up and running and ready for you guys to get posting by the end of the week.

Calling MFX punmasters.  George The Animal Peel needs a name for his blog.

He's thinking Maximum A-Peel.  Can you do better?  Leave your suggestions here.  The blog is one of those random, about anything kind of blogs!

Also - Alex K is working like a madman on banners and we're almost there and should be launching them soon!

Cheers.

Well I decided to take the plunge and sign up to do a blog as well. It's going to primarily be focused on the geeky and nerdy such as table top gaming, retro gaming and collecting, cult films such as kaiju and exploitation and all that. Calling the blog Welcome to the geekdom. Thought it was clever.

I can't make any solid promises on that but it is something I am looking to do, it all depends on if I can get my buddies to play said games. Well baring solo games like chainsaw warrior or games with a video game version like talisman or ticket to ride.

Indeed there is.  Just got confirmation from Alex yesterday that he has got all the banners done.  We've got the blogs all sorted and set up on the side, along a sliding bar at the top of the page (similar to what SLTD had) and a guide to posting is being prepared for everyone.

So we should have it all up and running this weekend, or at the latest early next week.

Keep an eye on your email inboxes and I'll be in touch as soon as I can with all the final details.

Then you guys can get blogging!!

Further to this, I've just uploaded the banners to the site, and have completed a helpful guide on posting to the site. Duckman, I'm emailing you this guide as we speak. I'll be adding the writers as Contributors to the site shortly, and we'll go from there.

Sounds good buddy!  I'll send a mass email out to all the blog writers with the guide attached once everything is good to go!

Alright troops, looks like we're in the final stages and you guys can get blogging soon.

Check your email for your log-in details for the MFX site.

I'm also sending you all a guide on how to post on the site.  That'll be coming from the MFX email account when I get home from work.

It's really easy to post on a word press site, hell, even I can do it!

As I said before, you guys can write what you want, when you want.  So don't feel you need to get approval from me or anyone else.  Just write what you feel like and we'll get it up on our site and promoted through our various social media platforms.

Speaking of which, if you don't already have a Twitter account, might be a good idea to get one to promote your blog.  You don't need to, but it's the best way to get the word out there.

Any questions or problems, let me know, either via a PM here, or drop me an email at mfx.show@gmail.com

Cheers,
Duckman

I went to preview mine and discovered I have no idea how to insert line breaks.  I looked it up on google but only saw a thing that said it should do line breaks automatically.  Unless it does, but doesn't show it when you preview?  I have no idea.

Are you talking about this kind of line break?

Title of Whatever
by So and So

Or something with a proper space inbetween...

...like this?

WordPress does the latter automatically, but if you hold the Shift key and hit Enter/Return, it'll do the former.

The second one.  Whenever I preview the post it all shows up as one big block of text.

So are the 'blogs' submitted for review and then published?

I only have the one showing on the page now, but I thought it was someone else who sad they had submitted it?

The one that is showing for me is Sgt. Josh, but the way it comes up is just one huge block of text.  Not sure if this was meant that way or if it just needs the proper editing?

i only comment because i currently read with one eye, which is my weakest and huge chunks of text blur together
Title: Re: Want to write for MFX?
Post by: Duckman on February 25, 2015, 08:43:33 AM
Yeah, Josh jumped the gun a little bit - but in a good way, he's keen to get his stuff up there.

I'm going to edit it tonight to break it up into paragraphs, which'll make for easier reading.

The guide that Alex posted on the FB group explains the process for posting.  The basic set up is they're written, then submitted for me to post.  This is so I know what's going up, and can in turn fire out Tweets and FB posts to promote them.

Plus it'll help stagger them going up, so they don't all go up at one time.  Want to space it out a bit, so each one gets the right promotion.

If you haven't seen the guide, let me know and I'll email a copy to you.

Cheers!

I saw it, but didnt read it! Kind of because Im not writing.

But yes, that explains it.

But thats a good idea, releasing them separately, will break up the week.

Copying and pasting Josh's at some point so I can break it up in word.

Another question..

I know you have accounts set up for bloggers, but will people have a chance to get an account to reply to posts on? giving feedback on the site, or are you just wanting to keep that on the forums, or not at all?

That's a good point Blade.  The site's been closed to comments because we kept getting spammed with rubbish.  Might as well reopen them to allow people to comment.

Leave that with me and I'll come back and update everyone later.

I've asked Alex to have a look at getting a new text editor plug in for the site.  At the moment, I have to go into each post and add line break HTML to get the paragraph spacing.  I'm not sure why it's doing that but we'll get it sorted.

I've been away this weekend, but I'll get things sorted out tonight.

If you use the text instead of visual you can do brackets

Gives you a break on there that shows up

Hey, I added my own line breaks!

The HTML for a line break as I think I remember is <BR>
Title: Re: Want to write for MFX?
Post by: Duckman on March 03, 2015, 05:21:36 AM
Not on your first one you didn't Rob, not sure if you've written a new one since then.  But the first one had no line breaks and I had to go in and manually add them.

Brackets aren't working either.  There's a line of HTML that I from word press that adds a few pixels between and forms a paragraph.

Don't worry though, we'll sort it.
Title: Re: Want to write for MFX?

The way I've been getting it to work is by setting the alignment of the whole thing to left.  I came across this by accident while centering the image and wanting to be doubly cautious about the rest.

People can now leave comments on the blogs thanks to 1) the Disqus plugin for WordPress and 2) the fact I turned off the option to hide the comments area LOL.

Ok, looks like aligning to the left sorts out the paragraph spacing.  Why?  I have no idea!  But it's working and I don't have to put in code in every post, so yay!

Just as a head's up to some of you who have blogs pending. I'm away for the weekend, so we'll post them early next week.  It'll help stagger things and hopefully will mean more eyes on your blogs when they're posted next week.  Hope this is ok with everyone, but I didn't want to flood the site with too many new posts today and some to get lost in the shuffle.

Good idea not to overload, I might be wrong but doesn't WordPress have a feature that allows 'timed' release of posts? Kinda the same way some Twitter apps allow Scheduled tweets. Might be worth checking (that said, this likely wouldn't post all the relevant promotional stuff on here, Facebook etc along with the timed post).

Yeah, WP lets you change the date/time of a post so you can schedule a post for future publication or backdate a post to fit whatever context you need (For example, if you have an audio recording from a specific date you want to be "published" on that date)

If you don't have ANY formatting around the text, it's not gonna look good. It's not enough to do a<br > tag between paragraphs. There are specific tags that make the text look normal, such as aligning it. You could also use the <p> command to denote a paragraph, <h1> to <h6> to define different headers, and <article> to index the blog as a blog.
Title: Re: Want to write for MFX?
Post by: T-Bonizzle on March 03, 2015, 10:24:11 PM
I'm assuming an html 5 compatible platform, otherwise <article> won't do dick.
Title: Re: Want to write for MFX?
Post by: Duckman on March 04, 2015, 04:27:43 AM
Cheers T-bone.  The left align thing has fixed it, but I'll give the <p> thing a try too.

The reason I want to do the posts, without the automatic schedule, is I want to Tweet the link and update the FB page at the same time.  At the moment I can't do that if the posts are going up automatically.  There's probably some work around of being able to do timed Tweets or something, but I haven't had any time to look into that.

That said, I should be able to post some on Friday and Saturday if I can get on a computer at my Aunt's house.

Also folks, please remember to retweet everyone's blogs when the link goes up.  Get as many eyes as possible on each other's work.

Cheers.
