Tonight, Without a Paddle, excuse my French but what a shit film.

Looper - fucking loved it.  Amazing time travel/thriller with very little logic holes and Bruce Willis in one of the better performances of his career.  Tremendous performances all round really - especially the freaky little kid.  They advertise it as "this year's Matrix," but that's really misleading.  This was much more intense and head fucking than the Matrix.  Also, no kung-fu or the dude from Bill and Ted in it!

When this movie ended everyone in the cinema just sat in a kind of stunned silence for a good few minutes as the credit rolled.  No one got up or started talking and shit like they normally do.  A really powerful movie, with some great action scenes and top notch performances.  I can't recommend this movie highly enough, go see it now!

Red State - fucking WOW!  I'm an unabashed Kevin Smith mark (explains a lot about MFX podcast I suppose) and I've grown up with his movies.  Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Clerks 2 - I love these films and even his less than stellar ones like Zac and Mirri Make a Porno and even (yes) Jersey Girl I can still enjoy.

Red State is like nothing Kevin Smith has ever made before.  As he says himself - the camera actually moves in this one!  It's actually three movies in one, a horror, a look at religious fundamentalism and then a crazy shoot out for the last 20 mins.  This is an unsettling film.  It challenges a lot of notions about religion, the state, morality and a lot more.

Simply put this is the grown up movie a lot of Kevin Smith fans have been waiting for him to make since Chasing Amy.  Red State is one of the few movies that I've laughed at and been horrified by, but also challenged in how I view certain aspects of humanity and the big institutions we create like the church and government.

Stunning lead performance by Michael Parks as the fucked up leader of the religious cult (based loosely on Fred Phelps and his God Hates Fags crew) and also a great turn by John Goodman as the lead FBI agent who desperately doesn't want another Waco on his hands.

Really worth checking out on DVD and a movie that will change your opinion on Kevin Smith as a writer and director.  Top stuff, loved it!

Peace

I saw Looper a few weeks back and I loved it. My friend didn't like it much because I think he was expecting it to have more action in it.

I have a few that I've seen. I'll go down the list.

The Cabin in the Woods. I loved this movie. I knew that it would have a little bit of humor since Joss Whedon helped write it but I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. From the beginning, you basically know to not take it all that seriously. I loved the transition between the movie being a slasher film, to an action movie, to an apocalypse movie. The lines were self aware and hilarious. I highly recommend this but it isn't for everyone.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower was a great movie. This one was special because the writer of the book wrote and directed the movie. It stays true to the book very well but it does jump around quite a bit before getting to the main story parts. The acting by the whole cast is very well, especially the guy who plays Charlie. A bit of a nostalgic movie that makes you feel happy and sad at the same time. I highly recommend this one.

Atlas Shrugged Part 2. Not a good movie. I saw the first one and it was terrible, but since I saw it, I might as well see them all. The second one had a bit more dramatic moments that added to the story but that is all that it really had going for it. The acting wasn't great, but it wasn't laughable.

My Sucky Teen Romance. Before you say anything, I was curious because at my local theater, there was a little spotlight of the young writer/director who made this movie. I thought I'd check it out. The story is basically about a teenage girl who goes to a comic book convention, tries to get with this guy she knows, and fight off vampires in the process. The production values are very poor, besides some of the blood and special effects used towards the end. The acting isn't all that great either but I felt that the film was like a movie you would see on Nickelodeon, minus the blood and cursing of course. There are some funny moments, which include somewhat excessively making fun of Twilight. It was enjoyable for what it was.

Paris, Texas. I thought it was a beautiful film through the cinematography. I personally wasn't into the film until about the halfway mark, which was when it got into the story about the main character and his son. It is a pretty slow moving film but I think it is worth it, just for the cinematography.

Paranormal Activity 4. It wasn't as good as the third one but the same directors took on the fourth effort and did a good job with it. This time, the cameras are from laptops, which can be seen as a limitation but it works. Also, one "special feature" with one of the camera's is using night vision to see the Kinect tracking dots in the living room. There are a few good scares but a lot more fake scares. The acting is good by the main girl for what it was and if you are a fan of the movies you'll enjoy it.

Taken 2. Good movie, definitely not as good as the first one but I felt it does enough to where it doesn't seem like the same movie over again. The acting was pretty good for what it was. Liam Neeson continues to have that badass appeal. Good movie. I would wait for it on DVD though.

End of Watch: Very good cop movie, didn't live up to the hype it had as "best movie in a long time" from a lot of my buddies but I did enjoy it with the woman. I liked how real the movie was, as was pretty damn realistic. I think if you like any crime thrillers or wanna keep up on "good movies in 2012" this one is up there.

For some reason this hasnt got a lot of play in advertisements. Saw it at the weekend. Will Ferrell, Zack G. are too political rivals running for Senate in a seemingly locked up district.

If you like either of their work check it out for the laughs. Zack G. sat at his table with his family as they confess things they might have done wrong that would hurt his campaign is fucking hilarious.

Watched this last night as was pretty disappointed. That scene was the best part of the movie, and it defiantly had it moments, but it felt really repetitive to me.

I haven't seen it and I'm not sure if I will. I usually don't like Will Ferrell's comedy movies, other than The Other Guys. I think it comes down mostly to the comedy style. I like his drama movies more.

I watched Argo. Pretty cool movie. Really good filmography, great suspense. It was actually kinda disgusting though how the contributions of every other country involved in the rescue (it was after all a 5 country co-op mission, something the movie makes no mention to) were down played for the sake of making the CIA seem that much more heroic.

As a film, it was good. Actually, really good. Easily 8/10.

My recommendation, anyone from the UK or New Zealand especially should avoid it at all costs. You will be offended if you've studied modern history. Anyone from the states, ya you'll love the movie and want to see it two or three times.

Paranormal Activity 4 was horrible. Most boring movie I've seen all year. Going to see Wreck-It Ralph later.

James, everytime you post in the OOC your perception of "yourself" is just as apparently off key 'in game' as GM Franchise as it is 'out of game' as yourself lol.

Now I know how Franchise feels every game.  Speak your mind and you get singled out for it.

I so wished I saw Wreck-It Ralph but my friend wanted to see The Man with the Iron Fists instead. Terrible idea. I'll give a short review.

The Man with the Iron Fists falls flat on its face from the beginning. While a lot of it is somewhat of an homage to martial arts films, there is nothing truly special about this movie. There is an over abundance of rap styled music throughout the film, which makes sense since RZA directed the movie but that style that he was going for just wasn't clicking. About ten or fifteen minutes before the end there was a cool couple of sequences but nothing could be done to save this movie. The story is fairly simple but doesn't add anything special to what is already a bland movie. I explained to my friend that Jamie Chung was the best part of this movie. Russell Crowe does a damn good job because he is Russell Crowe, but even he couldn't save this movie. Skip this one for sure.

I just saw Looper. It's the best film I've seen all year.
