How come Fedor is still number one HW when he hasn't beaten anyone of real note for a while?

Cuz its Fedor, thats the only real way I can put it. He's still cleaned the division, and he's beaten Sylvia and Arlovski when they were still regarded as legit, as I usually tend to hold a "what have you shown me over the past two years", but if Lesnar tops Velasquez, he'll obviously become my new #1 as hes more active then Fedor, and has cleaned out the top contenders in the division (well still Dos Santos)

Moot point I suppose but I reckon Brock has to be number one heavyweight.  Fedor may be Fedor but honestly, he hasn't fought anyone near the level Brock has in the past 2 years.

Just my take, seems like Fedor is only there because he's your favourite, not because of his recent performances.

The argument FOR Fedor:

31 consecutive wins, a feat no one has ever done. he beat Nog in Nog's prime when Nog was the #1 HW in the world, and he did it twice. He defeated Sylvia, who was still top 5 coming out of UFC, as well as Arlovski, who was arguably the 2nd ranked HW when they fought. Rogers was breaking into the top 10 when Fedor fought him.

Fedor did indeed lose to Werdum, but fedor's shown over the years that he's the top dog at the HW division and has proven it.

The argument AGAINST Fedor:

Sure, his fights with Sylvia and Arlovksi they were ranked THEN, but hindsight shows they were both over rated. Same with Rogers. Werdum was barely a top ten guy and Fedor got beat. Meanwhile, Brock's facing off with the up and comers, Couture, Herring, Mir and (well, ok, ONE up and com
er) Carwin.

It comes down to personal value. Do you value a 31 fight win streak against top 5 opponents AT THE TIME OF THE FIGHT, Cro Cop, Nog x2, Herring x2, Syvlia, Arlovski and going undefeated and separating yourself from the pack by 50 miles..

OR...

Does one loss to a top ten opponent, and hindsight to attack credibility of fighters of years prior close the 50 mile gap between fedor and everyone else?

To Cory:

I think where you and I have different opinions is it seems you take into account HOW you win, while I hold in account it's whether you win because ultimately, that is what matters.

Silva is on the longest win streak in the UFC currently, and all time. GSP has lost during Silva's run, which a loss is a loss, no matter how flukish.

That's why I put Silva 1, GSP 2, simple because one has been defeated while the other has not.

I have to agree with Duckman here, sorry Cory  :P

Before I get into the Fedor/Brock argument, I want to first ask you why you have Fabricio Werdum ranked at number 7? Werdum's 1st round submission over Fedor (who you have ranked #1) should be more than enough to put the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt into the top 3 or at least top 5. Granted, dos Santos completely smashed Werdum so one can make a case that dos Santos should be ranked higher than him but that was also two years ago. Since that loss, Werdum has gone 3-0 and granted his two decision wins over Mike Kyle and Antonio Silva weren't THAT impressive but how can he be ranked below the top 5 after subbing Fedor in mere minutes?

Shane Carwin is probably my favorite heavyweight fighter in the world, as part of the media I am not supposed to say I have favorites but I really do consider myself a big Carwin fan. That said, I don't think he should be ranked ahead of Werdum. Carwin looked very impressive early on against Brock but it also showed that he has glaring weaknesses in his conditioning and submission defense.

Any top 10 heavyweight that can weather Carwin's early storm and avoid his massive punching power, will be able to defeat him in the later rounds.

Here's how I would personally rank the heavyweight division right now:

1. Brock Lesnar
2. Fabricio Werdum
3. Fedor Emelianenko
4. Cain Velasquez
5. Alistair Overeem
6. Junior dos Santos
7. Shane Carwin
8. Frank Mir
9. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
10. Antonio Silva

But that's just how I view the top guys right now. Everyone has their own opinion. Rankings, in the grand scheme of things, don't mean much. They are merely speculation and a fun way to generate some interesting MMA discussion.

As far as the Fedor/Brock argument, I personally think Fedor is on a slow decline where as Brock is rapidly improving but that's just my opinion. I definitely don't think Fedor is the best heavyweight in the world right now but he's still one of the best in the division, that's for sure.

Could Fedor beat Brock if they fought this year? Maybe. In a few years? I think Brock would smash him.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like that fight will ever happen :(.

I also think that Brock's recent string of wins over Carwin, Mir and Couture are more impressive than Fedor's last three wins over Rogers, Arlovski, and Sylvia. I think Rogers is extremely overrated, personally. Arlovski and Sylvia were quality wins though but I believe Frank Mir and Randy Couture are higher quality victories.

Just my two cents though :D

But Cory makes great points too.

That's my point.  This isn't a pound for pound ranking when Fedor was in Pride smashing all those big names.  We're talking 2010 and the guy isn't fighting top level fights on a regular enough basis for me to be considered a number one rank.

The heavyweight who holds the World Title of the company with the deepest talent pool has to be above a guy who is hand picking opponents to maintain his reputation that was built at least 5 years ago.

It's like saying Italy are the best football team in the world because they won the 2006 World Cup.

Good debate though guys, very interesting points made all round.

By taking into account the last three opponents, we're looking at Couture, Mir and Carwin vs Sylvia, Arlovski and Rogers.

Well, you could break those down into individual fights.

Rogers v Carwin. Both guys hit HARD. We've seen Rogers go three rounds, we've seen him go 1.5 with Fedor, including a portion of rd 1 where Rogers unleashed a heavy flurry of GnP and didn't gas. However... Carwin hits REALLY hard. Overall, I think it's pretty much a push. Carwins biggest win was Mir, while Rogers was Arlovski.

Arlovski vs Couture. Randy wouldn't have a chance when it comes to striking, as he doesn't have KO power nor the striking ability of Arlovski. Couture's strength would be in the grappling, but AA has shown for years he's got good TDD and submission defense.

That leaves Mir v Sylvia... The advantage goes to Mir.

When you break it down the level of competition really isn't that far off.

I still would put Fedor at #1 because he had a extremely WIIIIDDDEEEE gap between him and the rest of the division. The loss narrows that gap, but I dont think it pushes anyone over him due to how far he was compared to the other HW's, which includes Brock who's only had 6 total fights, 1 Korean Can and 1 loss.

But as for GSP and Silva, I always had them right after him as it was, so I wouldn't argue about either of them jumping past him in P4P.
Title: Re: Pound 4 Pound Rankings
Post by: Cory on August 31, 2010, 11:18:39 PM
Maddox hit it on the head, a independent p4p will always have some form of biasness as its a personal opinion, and I think Fedors dominace and one slip up isn't enough to slip him from the first spot. But if Lesnar puts away Velasquez, he's essentially cleared the division, and he is my #1. Untill then, The Last Emperor is staying up top.

I like the discussion over my p4p, I like to hear everyones views. I get shit for having Diaz in my p4p, but as my opinion, hes be the most dominate WW aside from GSP (id say about tied with Fitch, but Diaz has finished thus hes #2), hes top 4 best striker in MMA, along with Belfort, Silva, and Aldo.
Title: Re: Pound 4 Pound Rankings
Post by: Cory on September 01, 2010, 12:33:57 AM
Also, never really thought about this but it could impare ones judgement is how do you base your p4p rankings by? Is it wins or talent?

The Fedor/Brock debate, it's like well Brock has defeated tougher opponents in recent memory, but is Brock better than Fedor? On most accounts, he is not, there for he isn't the best heavyweight fighter in the world.

I'd like to believe with the hours I've spent maintaining my own, independent list for almost 2 years now, I'd like to think i take both of these in consideration, with more weight on wins rather talent, but the talent aspect I do consider in my rankings.

Lets just see a few examples:

I have Aoki, Penn, Alvarez, and Melendez all higher than current #1 contender Gray Maynard. Maynard may be on a better win streak in the top promotion, but I think Aoki would easily submit Maynard on the ground, Penn would dominate Maynard if he even gave a shit about MMA anymore (hes going to slip down my list soon), and I think Alvarez and Melendez are toss ups. You could also say the same thing considering how high Nick Diaz is on my WW list.

New #1 HW fighter in Cain Velasquez

Wanderlei Silva in the top 5? Don't get me wrong, I love Wanderlei, but that is kind of crazy.

His one win in the last 2 years was a close decision over Michael Bisping. Bisping is obviously a talented fighter but not really a title contender, and he certainly wasn't at the time of their fight at UFC 110.

I mean from a marketing stand point, I guess you could say one more impressive win would put Wanderlei into title contention just because of his name value and popularity with fans.... but I honestly think all of the fighters you ranked below him (Marquardt, Okami, Lombard, Maia, etc) would beat him.

Wanderlei is a very exciting fighter but I don't consider him a top contender at this point.

But like I said, I can understand ranking him high if you're going on pure marketability.
Title: Re: Pound 4 Pound Rankings
Post by: Cory on October 27, 2010, 11:04:37 PM
Marquardt is the only guy I thought about swapping. I think Wandy would stop Maia, and outscore Okami.

Lombard is below him just based on competition fought.
Title: Re: Pound 4 Pound Rankings
Post by: MitchMMA on October 28, 2010, 05:24:47 PM
Maia's chin is solid though, but you could have a point there. I would definitely favor Wanderlei if he could keep that fight standing.

As for Okami, I think Okami would out wrestle Wanderlei to a decision but that's just my opinion.

IDK, it's tough to say. Wanderlei looked good in his first MW fight against Bisping, I'd like to see how he will do against a top tier opponent before putting him ahead of guys like Nate and Okami.

We will just have to see how he does when he returns in 2011, although coming off knee surgery he probably won't do very well at first.

I would like to point out the "Super Hluk" champion of the world isn't on this list.  Ikuhisa Minowa Fights people well beyond his weight class and has a few wins over some top notch guys in his career.  That alone should get him at least a number 11 bonus slot listed on the list.  Anderson Silva avoids him at all costs because he fears the heel hook.

Yeah Minowaman is pretty rediculous, but he loses anytime he fights any legit guy throughout his career.

I.e Evan Tanner, Kondo, Semmy Schilt, Paulo Filho, Rampage, Wanderlei, Sakuraba.

But if there has even been a freak killer, he'd be it.

If I were to compare the Rampage or Wanderlei fights to something traumatic, I would say rape.  It was like a severe case of rape in that ring.

I have a question. How can people be ranked higher then others in the division rankings, but not the p4p? You have Valasquez as the #1 Heavyweight, but he's behind Fedor in p4p? In what world does that make sense? For awhile you also had Evans and Rua reversed in the same manner, so its been bugging me.

Post by: Cory on February 08, 2011, 10:55:26 AM
ts really confusing to explain, but if you check around the internet, (i just did) I found 3 other rankings that had Fedor higher on the p4p, and Cain #1 heavyweight.

I guess the BEST way to explain it, is that the Heavyweight rankings alone is based on current form, lets say how you've done over your last 5 fights. Cain has been the best heavyweight in the world over his last five fights, as where Fedor lost his last fight, dropping him.

The p4p rankings, are more based on "long-term" performance, I guess, and everyone's list has their own personal bias (as I have Nick Diaz in my p4p). FOr the example you questioned, Cain was never on the list, and Fedor was #1 for the longest time. After Cain won the UFC HW Title and Fedor lost for the first time in 30 fights, Cain finally made his way to #10 but am I gonna drop Fedor from #1 to off the list because of the fluke loss? He drops in the Heavyweight rankings because of his activeness and loss, but in the p4p scheme of things, it didn't affect him much.

I dont know if this explained anything.

Just wondering if you made these yourself, or got them from a site? Debateable in some spots, I think Fedor should be lower(in HW rankings) and Jon Jones should be higher. (in P4P rankings, IMO I think he should be higher then Cain.)

All homemade, and I have been sloppy as of the last few months in keeping everything tip top shape, but I always redo everything at the beginning of the year.

But to defend those two points,

A) Fedor had a ways to fall....considering I didn't move him any places after the Werdum loss (freak loss at the time), hes on a two fight losing streak after that and slipped 4 spots, (had him at 2, now JDS). I think the only person who could be higher at that spot is perhaps Barnett for how well hes doing in the Strikeforce HW tournament, but I think the 5-10 HW spots could really be interchangeable, and comes down to personal preference.

B) P4P, I have Cain there because 1) undefeated still, even tho Jones is really undefeated, 2) HW is generally the most prestigious weight class every since the Ali days of boxing, which is why I have him ONE spot higher than Jones.

Just made Jons the second post of this thread, as with the huge amount of events that get stickied at the top, the less the better, so stay tuned for the 2 best p4p rankings on the entire internet.

Im glad Jons doing this so maybe I'll get off my ass and update them more than 3 times a year. This thread will also be open for discussion for the p4p rankings, so what do you guys think?
Title: Re: Cory & Jon's Pound 4 Pound Rankings -- (Jan 9th, '14)
Post by: Cory on January 09, 2014, 10:17:26 PM
Comparing our two quickly.

p4p- I have Gil and Hendricks, Jon has Rousey and Mendes.  I agree with Rousey being legit, if there was more competition in the UFC womans division, and maybe after a win over McMann I might move her in, as shes the only UFC champion not in my rankings. However, Chad Mendes? I can never picture that dude without reliving him getting absolutely smashed by Aldo, I think Hendricks being the deserving WW Champ or Gilbert who in defeat was still very debatable for the title, over a dude who got destroyed in his title fight, and hasn't been back there since. For the record, Im a fan of Mendes, outside of Aldo the only 145er who has legit KO power.

Heavyweight - All good, I have Werdum higher, you have Browne higher, but both are contenders and pretty sure their gonna have a #1 contender fight next.

Light Heavyweight - I have interim Bellator champ Emmuel Newton who went 4-0 in 2013, and beating heavy favourite and one time legit 205er in Mo Lawal TWICE, and won the Interim title, Sonnen however went 1-2 so be it against better competition, 2 KO loses in the same year its tough to keep him on the list.

Middleweight - I have Lombard @ 10 (not sure if he 100% made the move to 170) and Jon has Gegard Mousasi (I left completely off my list) at number 4. Now if Hectors next fight is at 170, I have Mousasi as next to move in at 10....but my 11 guy is Jons 4 guy. Mousasi is one my favorite fighters, especially his run in Dream, but he beat essentially a nobody in Mike Kyle in January , and literally a no body in  Ilir Latifi in maybe the most unimpressive fights ive ever seen against a last minute opponent, who never fought in the UFC and had like a 4-3 record. If Mousasi smashed that dude, he'd probably be at 7-8 at the most, but 4? The only way he reached close to 4 is if he smashes Machida.

Welterweight - I left GSP on, if hes only out a year, hes still the 170er to beat, thus staying, Jon has GSP off due to his "retirement". Same reason I kept Nick Diaz on, its only a matter of time before their back IMO, and no one else has stepped up to dethrone them.

Lightweight - No way Grey Maynard makes a top 10, he was IMO the worst fighter in all weight classes in 2013, Id rather Jim Miller in the lineup after a FOTN performance in a no contest and a slick submission win late in the year, over Maynard who went 0-2 in 2013, with two very nasty KO's as well.

Feathweight - All good.

Bantamweight - All good.

Flyweight - Only difference is really im higher on Jon Lineker (@ #3), Jon likes Jon Dodson @ 2.

Female - Again, I left Tate off (Jon had her @ 10) not only for being super overrated, TUF kinda helped, but she got stopped in her two 2013 fights, a brutal Ko loss to Zingano and then an armbar loss to Rousey.
