Wrestling Dropped as an Olympic Sport

International Olympic Committee leaders dropped wrestling from the Olympic program on Tuesday, a surprise decision that removes one of the oldest Olympic sports from the 2020 Games.

The IOC executive board decided to retain modern pentathlon — the event considered most at risk — and remove wrestling instead from its list of 25 "core sports."

The IOC board acted after reviewing the 26 sports on the current Olympic program. Eliminating one sport allows the International Olympic Committee to add a new sport to the program later this year.

Wrestling, which combines freestyle and Greco-Roman events, goes back to the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.

"This is a process of renewing and renovating the program for the Olympics," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. "In the view of the executive board, this was the best program for the Olympic Games in 2020. It's not a case of what's wrong with wrestling, it is what's right with the 25 core sports."

As many of you know, wrestling used to be my life. I've been nationally ranked, attended nationals, competed nearly non-stop for 4 years in the sport and this news today, it disgusts me. What kind of idiot would drop wrestling from the olympics?

Really? Keep tae kwon do and its absurdly stupid rules. Keep sailing and equestrian, two sports that have less to do with skill and more to do with equipment. Keep shooting, modern pentathlon (stupidest sport ever), synch swimming, hell keep TRAMPO-fucking-LINE but drop fricken WRESTLING from the Olympics? Really? REALLY? What the absurd fuck is the olympic committee smoking, WRESTLING is as much part of the olympic image as track or swimming. Its purely retarded, frickn useless sacks of meat run the olympics nowadays, they will end up killing the games and this is more fucking proof of that.

Name me one sport that incorporates more athletes in more countries thats not a track event than WRESTLING. IDIOTS, fuck them

It's all about the money.  After all, these are the same idiots that dropped baseball several years back.  Besides, they barely cover anything other than track & field and swimming anyway.

I dont classify that as an Olympic Sport in terms of baseball seeing as only the USA, Japan and a handful of Latin American countries can put out teams. It is not a world wide sport like Rugby or Basketball.

As for Wrestling I think that gets a pass on well...the fact it was an original sport back in Roman times maybe? Come on Olympic Committee.

I'm fucking disgusted.  How are they going to get rid of one of the oldest sports in the world. Not only one of the oldest but the fucking original sport of the Olympics. For a bullshit as sport like golf. Wrestling is way more difficult and takes way more skill than golf. Golf is fucking leisure sport and imo just boring. This is complete and utter bullshit
