The Lost Boys Getting a Sequel Comic From Vertigo

Sleep all day. Party all night. It's fun to be a vampire. So goes the tagline for the 1987 cult-classic vampire film The Lost Boys, arguably one of the coolest horror comedies ever made. Directed by Joel Schumacher (Flatliners, A Time to Kill), The Lost Boys centers on the Emerson family, who've just moved to the small beach community of Santa Carla, California where they run afoul of a nest of vampires that have made the seaside town their feeding ground.

A hit with critics and audiences alike, The Lost Boys did well in its theatrical run, grossing $32.2 million on a budget of only $8.5 million. Dripping with '80s style, a hypnotic soundtrack, and a fun rock 'n' roll atmosphere, along with then up-and-coming stars like Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Jami Gertz, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman, the The Lost Boys' built a loyal cult fanbase that has only grown over the ensuing decades.

Although the film has its legion of supporters, a proper sequel (so long as you don't count the two direct-to-video installments) never saw the light of day. Thankfully, Vertigo Comics is set to right that wrong and to offer fans the next best thing to a real Lost Boys 2: a comic miniseries that continues where the first movie left off.




According to Variety, the comic is set not long after the ending of the original movie, with Santa Carla finally starting to become a normal town again after the demise of head vampire Max and the rest of his vampire clan. The rest of the plot involves a gang of female vampires named The Blood Belles who arrive on the scene, looking for the now-human Star (played by Gertz in the film), who is apparently their long lost sister. Not willing to lose Star, Michael (Patric) and Sam (Haim) once again team up with the Frogs to take out the vampires. The miniseries is being written by Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash), with art by Scott Godlewski and Patricia Mulvihill, and covers designed by Tony Harris.

While nearly 30 years is quite a long delay between original and sequel, The Lost Boys comic is likely the closest fans will ever get to revisiting Santa Carla and reconnecting with the Emersons and Star. At least in comic form, all the characters can still look as delightfully '80s as they did back in 1987. If Vertigo does things right, it'll soon be fun to be a vampire once again.

The first issue of The Lost Boys comic miniseries hits shelves on October 12, 2016.
