It was Rikishi. He did it for...The Rock. He did it...for the people.

You're right, Jesus is nicer. But Alex is a close second.

Does anyone else think of this episode every time they hear Katy Perry's "Part Of Me." for some odd reason I have clips of the episode playing in my head like a music video.
Brian returns in the 12-15-13 episode entitled "Christmas Guy" Stewie in the present runs into the Stewie who traveled forward in time to Christmas and borrows his time machine return pad to go back to the moment in time when Brian was killed to prevent it.
If this stands it's hard to say whether it was always planned or if pressure got to the writers/creators of the show. Nor how it will effect other storylines (mainly Vinny) whose voice actor signed on for six episodes and only appeared in two so far. Maybe he'll just not have previously met the Griffins and end up with different owners.

This is just a guess, but I'm assuming that several months have elapsed in show canon since he was "killed" far more time than the two episode absence would lead you to believe. I'd assume that since he "died" playing street hockey, that the weather was still warm, so maybe late summer-early fall.
And then he returns around Christmas after Stewie goes back and saves him
The fact this is up for debate is ridiculous, it was obviously a stunt and why the 'show canon' is being debated when nobody has aged in 10 seasons...is beyond me...

I further can't believe anyone was sucked in by this. I was keen to find out who died, but on the premise it wouldn't last...

I'd venture to say that most fans knew it wasn't going to stick and weren't discussing the fact that he was "killed" as though it was a permanent thing, but rather when and how they were going to bring him back. Others took it far too seriously, without even waiting to see where they were going with it they threatened boycotts of the show and started petitions to bring the character back. Being as how popular the character is and how much merchandise it sells killing it off for good would be a dumb shit move in a business sense, so just thinking about that you knew it wasn't going to last forever. But I do sort of wonder about the long term future of the series if they felt the need to pull a stunt like this to spike ratings things might not be going well.

I dunno how well the show's doing.

I DO know Seth MacFarlane has been drawing a paycheck for the past decade purely for trolling the shit out of people. I think he'd pull a stunt like this just so he can call people dumbasses for buying it, he'll get paid to do a show somewhere by someone regardless.

Wonder if they plan on tying up that loose end in regards to the identity of the hit and run driver or just moving on and forgetting about it. It seemed a bit more intentional the first time when Brian is actually struck than it did when Stewie pushed Brian out of the way and saved him.
