Title: EFK's Favourite Music
Post by: Rob on July 23, 2010, 06:08:43 PM
Hey guys,

This is a little bit like Jesse Gunn's top 100 efedders, but it's a music alternative. I want you to list your top 15 songs of all time. I say 15 because I really want this list to be extensive. If 10 people reply, then that means I'll have 150 songs and I'll be able to get a more realistic top 100. I'm only posting this here because I only want to know what EFK's top 100 songs of all time are, so copy the following, and reply in the thread. I'll give it long enough for everyone to do this and get their favourites in, then I will compile the list.

Eh, I'm not too confident in my list making abilities, but it's something. I'll at least put in some non-modern songs that I think deserve some tribute. I'll use mostly mainstream examples since it's the closest thing I can to not being too biased. So, not my favorite, just a few that are particularly good from a significant band/significant.

1. Helter Skelter - The Beatles
2. Night On Bald Mountain - Mussorgsky
3. Wearing And Tearing - Led Zepplin
4. Raining Blood - Slayer
5. Bitches Brew - Miles Davis
6. Also sprach Zarathustra - Richard Strauss
7. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath(simply for cultural significance)
8. Day In the Life - The Beatles
9. O Fortuna - Carl Orff(albeit highly bastardized in our modern society)
10. Moonsongs - Thinking Plague (Eh, I have to include at least one of "my type" of music for self indulgence. Gorgeous epic)
11. Crossroads - Robert Johnson
12. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
13. Baba O'Reily - The Who
14. Flight of The Bumblebee - Rimsky-Korsokov(God, a lot of the more creative songs in classical are bastardized... saw it on a fucking Nasonex commercial just because it had a stupid fucking bee in it.)
15. Funeral March - Chopin(albeit wayyyy to well known for how it was sped up in cartoons)

Odd mismatch but eh...

This almost feels like one of those moments in high school where someone is told their opinion is wrong...

The first post Rob made said to list OUR top 15 songs. So if these are the songs people feel are in their top 15, then I don't think there's a real reason to nitpick. Not everyone listens to such a wide variety of music, as you make it seem, so you're going to get people with different tastes listing off THEIR top 15 songs. THEIR top 15. Not the top 15 songs that had the most significant cultural impact throughout the history of the world.

I could have listed songs that would be found in other peoples top 15, but that wouldn't be the truth.

Title: Re: EFK Top 100 Songs of All Time

The thread was about our personal favorite songs, which we've posted. Not cultural. If it was based on cultural, Smells Like Teen Spirit would be #1 as it was THE most cultural moving song of the last 20 years. No song changed music more than that one.

No, I think for the fact we're doing this to compile songs for a bigger list, one that will represent the whole community, we should stretch out a little.

I'm not saying I'm more cultural or better than anybody else. Even my knowledge of what I chose to include is limited. However, I chose things that I could imagine would make selective other members of the community nod their head and say "I could see that" or at least things I could argue to the point where people would nod their head, and say the same. Furthermore, That's why we have a community. I am not a fan of hip-hop, but I can't dismiss hip-hop as an illegitimate genre. Same goes for Reggae, etc. That's why the concept of this list is beautiful. It's a community getting together, and finding common ground, including things other members can't, advantages in numbers. But, I mean, look at like Hondo's list. That had everything from Amazing Grace to Soundgarden.

Even if he did phrase it as "Your top 15", it's really a way to try to assemble songs together for a bigger list. I'm not criticizing anybody's taste, I'm just saying, it's going to be a shitty list if we include things that are only "fresh off the presses" or are relatively unheard of. I only included Moonsongs as a representative of Rock In Opposition/Avant-Rock which is an unheard of yet highly developed, and legit genre. Notice, however, it's the only I included because it's relatively unheard of.

I didn't flood my list with Magma, Ruins, Gong, etc. Because they are personal favorites, not something that I could imagine would be worthy of being accumulated to a larger list.

Cliff it clearly says post your top 15 favourite songs, which means, post your top 15 favourite songs, and everyone else has posted their top 15 favourite songs, lol.

PS: I have my own taste in music and my own favourite songs. The fact you even suggest that list is to impress someone who doesn't even post here actually pisses me off a bit... I like that music, so I post it. I'm not not contributing this simply because it doesn't please Cliff the Almighty. Twat.

Ill agree to that, as well as the indy band statement.

And to Cliff, tho they might be covers, isn't it best 'song'? Which wont just be who wrote the song, but also include the musical performance that goes along with it. Most rap songs have ghostwritten lyrics, but you will only hear "Snoop Dogg" as the artist.

If it's any consolation Cliff, I tried not to let it all be JUST my favorites, but favorites that others could potentially agree upon. Trust me, if it was just my favorites irregardless, you'd have seen mostly Christian music, Linkin Park, and Blue Man Group.

Fair point. I think the best thing though is to attribute both original, and best performance if possible.

Russ, you really don't have to listen to what I'm trying to say, if you don't want to. I don't want to argue you over it. I can safely confirm there is no such thing as the almighty Cliff. I deeply respect you as a human being, and an RPer. You're a funny, intelligent, talented, and respectable e-fedder. Who, fairly enough, has accomplishments, and contributions to this game that far exceed myself.

However, your list was bogus. 45% of it felt at least there was some sort of musical link/theme, even with limited scope. The rest was a flavor of the month sideshow act for Gaga fangirls/boys. NOBODY likes Semi-Precious Weapons for any other reason. It's a harsh pill to swallow, but it's a fact. By your "top 15 favorites" it could very easily be considered "your top 15 favorites to go on the list". If you're going to put on 8 things by the same band, one of which from an academic, influential, journalistic, or general popularity perspective has relatively no impact on music at all, then you are not contributing to the list, or topic, at all.

Please, for God's sakes, save yourself, pull your head out of the sand. I am just three months nearing the permanent end of my e-fedding "career". As much as I love this game, and the people in it, I have personally grown bitter, and often self destructive, in my personal life. because of my inability to build a reasonable life around my obsession with it. Not a fault of the game, but mine for refusing to see the world beyond it for so many years, and fucking up my life.

You're just going to college now, Russ. This COULD be the prime of your life. If you're not going out and exploring new things just a little, and relying on online friends as your only source of music, or opinions of the arts in general. Even if you do, e-fedders aren't the only online community, and Laura isn't the only e-fedder. Your list, with few exceptions, read EXACTLY like I would imagine Laura's list reading if she did one. Two human beings don't just coincidentally start liking all of the same things exactly the same way. Unless one is lonely, and the other is under the illusion that he's going to get laid off it.

I can guarantee you there is no way I see this situation working any other way. I don't think Laura is a bad person, by any stretch. However, I think she finds comfort in having somebody to agree with her. It's one thing if you're doing that, but if it's dictating your entire taste in music, movies, and all things... Good God, you're missing out on more of the world than I am, and I'm fucking pathetic.

Go out and educate yourself on music. Even in the "pop" genre you covered practically no ground by just listing the same thing six hundred times. If you like Semi-Precious Weapons then fine, you like "that type of music". Why not explore "pop" deeper? What about Cher or Stevie Wonder or Madonna or Michael Jackson or Elton John? Four of them I hate, and the other I find listenable but am impartial to, but at least, if you like "that type of music" you can always get into what they're doing. Fuck, maybe even try some Bowie. Don't you even realize how badly you're wasting your time?

I'm sorry if it makes me a hypocrite, or a dickhead, or petty... But somebody has to fucking say it, Russ. If you're not going to contribute a real list then don't bother putting up a list at all. There is so much ground we're not covering from Beethoven to Led Zeppelin that you are just flat out ignoring. You're NOT getting laid by doing this, please, for God's sakes, retain a shred of dignity.

In fact, if you look hard enough, you can apply that intelligence and wit to impress a girl who A) You'll actually meet, and B) Won't force you to be a completely castrated poser with your life. They're all around you, Russ, and they're wonderful. Try going out a Saturday night here, and there, you are a fucking adult, man. You can drive. Save a little money. Get a part time job if you need a little more. Fucking Christ man, you're a young, funny, intelligent human being. It's not as hard as you think. I guarantee you, as somebody who has been labeled very seriously clinically insane, it's done for me than any of the doctor's brain drugs could ever do. You realize how many years late I had to wait to realize this?

Most of all, you can do all of this while retaining a friendship with Laura, if you try hard enough. I maintained a friendship with her for awhile, and until I really REALLY started tearing into Gaga, it was fine. You don't even have to stop liking "that kind of music" just use it as a platform to heighten your perspective on things NOT hinder your perspective on things, and blind you to the wonderful and vast world around you. Millions of artists bleed for this opportunity to gain your attention.

Anyway, zooming away from the point, I want to make it abundantly clear that I never EVER thought for one second I was a superior human being to you, and I never thought I was the universal law. If you haven't been thanked for the undertaking in arranging, and putting together the Experts tournament, I'd like to personally thank you. That tournament MADE my ADL character, and therefore is the reason for most of my non-TFWF fanbase. I could not do it without the hard work, and effort, that you put into this game. You afforded the time to us, and we're grateful. In fact, the entire e-fed world is grateful for your hard work, and care to this game.

Now, back to the actual point since I let myself stray a little. Russ, if you decide to reply to this, please do so in the Joust. If you do so, I will not respond or read the thread. You have two choices: Ignore what I say, or listen to what I say. I am not going to debate it, I don't need to debate it. Lets get back to the fucking list ok. It's a fantastic idea from Rob, and if used right, could be a way to bring our community more together.

Alex, that's exactly the point. You took sources from the music you liked, and picked and elitized. People on this forums will be able to pick a few, and the fact that it relates to multiple people brings bonding in the community. There was absolutely nothing wrong with what you did because you brought out a somewhat eclectic list of things, many of which could be individually traced to influencing a genre/mindset in music. Nothing you did is wrong in my eyes.

Ill agree to that, as well as the indy band statement.

And to Cliff, tho they might be covers, isn't it best 'song'? Which wont just be who wrote the song, but also include the musical performance that goes along with it. Most rap songs have ghostwritten lyrics, but you will only hear "Snoop Dogg" as the artist.

i take pride in knowing that my music taste wasn't derived from my excessive suckling at the MTV teat. Congrats on being told what to like by hipsters you put down publicly yet apparently idolize privately. :)

Cliff dude you are way out of line with your post, I rarely come on the music board but I wanted to contribute cause Rob is doing a hell of a job here and I see your post tearing into russ. You bring efedding, outside people and stupid comments into a thread that didn't deserve it. It was Russ's opinion and while you may not agree, you had no right to tear into him or anyone else list just because you didnt think they were culturally significant.

I'll admit I totally missed the 'of all time' and just took it to be favourite songs, and yeah I can 100% accept lady gaga and semi precious weapons are NOT the greatest of all time... but still, that was an unecessary attack Cliff.

First of all, I hate you Rob for making me compile such a small list of 15.  Second of all, why are people throwing tantrums on this topic that has 1000000 worded paragraphs in them?  It's your top 15 songs.  These that I list are for sure in my Top 100... though I doubt I'll have many that agree with me.  It was damn hard to narrow it down and I refuse to number them 1-15 cause I'm a hater.  And I'm sure as soon as I post this, I will think of something that just HAD to be on my list.  Bastard.

Hurt--Johnny Cash
Smooth Criminal--Alien Ant Farm
Help!--The Beatles
Satisfaction--Benny Benassi
Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing--Chris Isaak
Fuck The Other Side--The Dunk Ryders and Trick Daddy
Boyz-N-The-Hood--Dynamite Hack
Fuck The World--Insane Clown Posse
Get Up--James Brown
Voodoo Child--Jimi Hendrix
Wanna Be A Baller--Lil' Troy
Break Stuff--Limp Bizkit
Big Poppa--Notorious B.I.G.
Mad World--Roland Orzabel
Swagga Like Us--T.I., Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Lil' Wayne

There.  Happy?   >:(

Now everyone can read my list and say "Well, that explains it."

That long as post was some bullshit.

It's Russ's TOP 15 SONGS that he prefers. If you don't like it, oh well. No need to go on a f'n rant dude because YOU don't like what he put.

I'll go back and edit mine to be 15 pearl jam songs.. and I could rattle off 15 PJ songs that I love JUST as much as the ones I listed.

I just don't want Russ to forget that he's not posting here for anybody but who is here in this community. One song from them would have been ok, but fifty was a bit much. If you want to contribute to the thread, read what it's about, and don't use it for a tacky excuse for you to yell "HEY, I LIKE SEMI-PRECIOUS WEAPONS!!!"

I only bring up Laura, because this is like is not the first post of yours on forums that I've seen that says "HEY I LIKE SEMI-PRECIOUS WEAPONS!!! LOOK LAURA!!!", and including the fact you use the guy from it as your picbase, which again seems like a plea for attention in the same sense. This was not a mindless shot at either of them, more my personal annoyance that Russ's entire list was comprised entirely to be cool for somebody who isn't even posting here. It's incredibly annoying and counterproductive. If it was simply one or even two listings of the bands songs it'd be one thing, but to take over 50% of the list is just mindless pimping, and taking away the heart of the thread.

We get it, but it doesn't help this thread at all. If you're going to post a top 15, at least, some variety, or something anybody else actually posting here can try to relate to(and you did for a large portion of the list, but it's hard to pay attention/take seriously when it's stuck between the same band name). i know I post things that are "weird" and get little response, but at least that's with the purpose of vainly expanding the communities mindset. I don't even mind his flirting, as long as it's not hijacking other threads which serve productive purposes.

As for Maddox, calm down, ok. Christ, I know we were arguing in the thread about the Mummies, but you were continually bumping it. I've been harsh. I'm just saying, I like your picks, just... I don't know, there's a lot of time and genre out there, and I want people to recognize it.

P.S. apologize to any newer guys who may feel intimidated by my topic. I was extremely excessive, and I don't want it to be a reason not to contribute. I am very open minded, even if I have my harsh moments. I'm a harsh critic, but, opinions are opinions, and if you feel the need to disagree, I won't think any less of any of you for it. Even if I'm very elaborate, etc., and sometimes aggressive in my replies.

Harry Chapin - Cat's In The Cradle
Flogging Molly - If I Ever Leave This World Alive
Labi Siffre - Something Inside So Strong
They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul
T-Rex - Children Of The Revolution
Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Ella Fitzgerald - Paper Moon
Shakira - Estoy Aqui
Pogues - Thousands Are Sailing
Lord Of The Dance
Fields Of Athenrye
Five Man Electrical Band -Signs
Elton John - Crocodile Rock
Sawdoctors - N17

Note to Cliff - I would gladly include O Fortuna, Vivaldi's Spring, just about anything from Tchaikovski but I consider that sort of thing "music" but not so muc "song" (even though O Fortuna of course has vocals). Furthermore I would even further bastardize it by chosing it as Randy Orton's theme song.
Title: Re: EFK Top 100 Songs of All Time
Post by: Excaligore on July 25, 2010, 12:18:44 AM
I don't know. I mean, O Fortuna is an individual movement of Carmina Burana. Even if classical music works entirely different with labeling I think it's safe to say a movement is a song even if it doesn't utilize the same level/formula of repetition. Glad though to see another classical fan, I personally have a fondness for Tschaikowsky as well.

I'm almost wondering though if we should change this to "Top 100 Rock songs" since it is what the community is most acquainted with, myself included.

That's pretty much why I left classical off. Then again, I guess I also assumed that it was going to be lists filled with mainly Rock songs. Maybe what we need is to get another thread going for Classical music to show the appreciation for it on it's own level. And even though Tchaikovski is good, I more so enjoy Prokofiev, Ravel, Rachmaninoff and Mahler....

Rob!

See Cliff, the thread starter ROB said list YOUR top 15 songs of all time, not what songs cliff deems awesome enough to be on the list. So if Russ wants to mention the theme from twilight, the soundtrack to ninja turtles or barney's i love you..he can do it, without you resorting to bring up personal stuff like the Laura crap, talking down to him  and at the same time giving him back handed compliments about his efedding skill, or any of that shit you just pulled. This thread isnt about your musical tastes, or what you deem should be on anyone's list because like you said its a matter of opinion, Rob never asked why you consider them your favorites just to list them.

You know what, I'm done. Think what you like Cliff, if you think it's an attention plea to someone who doesn't even post here then fine, you think that. If you can't accept that just possibly I might be able to think for myself and might have my own opinions on music, then that's fine. Shows what a sad little man you are. Arguing with you's like trying to get the Pope to convert to Islam, so I've learnt to just let you win and maybe you can sit on your own and give yourself a little fist pump or something while the rest of us actually get on with enjoying the community and not running blindly into things throwing our unwanted opinions all over the place.

Sorry Rob, hopefully you can understand the frustration...

I thought people would be mature enough not to post snide remarks about others music tastes. I foolishly expected everyone to be that mature.

If you have a suggestion on how to improve my task, then PRIVATE MESSAGES ME. Don't cause unnecessary drama on here.

You have something to say about my idea? Bite your tongue.

Basically, I don't want any more NEGATIVE posting on this thread. Cliff, I'm laying down the law here. I've been trying my absolute hardest to get everyone on the forums to be comfortable with posting in these music forums without it being shot down. I'm pissed off beyond belief that within a night you've shot down eveyrthing I've been trying for.

With that being said, this is now a list of Top Bands, simply because of the altering in Songs. However, please continue to post your 15 songs because there is something I want to do with Songs at the end of this.

Thanks,
Rob.

I used indy bands in referece to the indy rock that you listen too, as rap is predominatly 'artist' , not a band. I see the comparison, and my statements a tad hypcrital, but I listen to a lot of non mainstream rap, but I CANT stand indy rock, and thats what I referrred to comparing with Dr. Dre. (ala most of the bands in your top 20 list in your signature)

This about which songs are in the top 100 by each band. It's not about your favourite band, that doesn't concern me in this thing I'm doing. It's the most popular bands based on songs and the most popular songs.

Not in any order.

1. "Don't Believe a Word" by Thin Lizzy - Raised on this genre of music by my dad, one of the songs that really stuck out for me.
2. "Pale Blue Eyes" by The Velvet Underground - Love it, nothing else needs saying.
3. "Red at Night" by The Gaslight Anthem - Its a cover, and probably not deserving of going on a 'greatest ever' list, but i've been listening to it constantly for the last two years or so and i haven't tired of it yet.
4. "Where Is My Mind?" by Pixies - Nothing to say about, just really like it.
5. "Peace Frog" by The Doors - Blend of Blues with the organ, and Morrisons voice, just works for me.
6. "Rising Force" by Yngwie Malmsteen - The song that got me interested in Hard Rock and still my favourite.
7. "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder - Most infectious song ever, i can't keep still when this song plays.
8. "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?" by Creedence Clearwater Revival - I love Fogerty's vocals, classic 70's song.
9. "Darkness, Darkness" by The Youngbloods - Not a fan of the rest of their work, but i adore this song.
10. "Born Under A Bad Sign" by Albert King - Just a great blues song.
11. "Can't Stand Me Now" by The Libertines - I usually get bored of these kind of songs, but this one has stuck.
12. "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd - Epic. That is all, bit of an obvious this one though heh.
13. "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" by Daft Punk - Some of the interchanges in rhythm/beat are great.
14. "Lithium" by Nirvana - I was obsessed with this song as a teenager, still think its brilliant.
15. "Dinosaurs Will Die" by NOFX - The greatest song ever written. Heh, purely nostalgic, up-beat choice. My favourite song through-out my teen years.

TIME!

I will start doing this over the weekend. Please don't be alarmed if it takes a few days, but I have a lot of RPing to do, a lot of personal stuff to do and a lot of course work starting next week. It will be up though, never fear! I will work on it every spare minute I get.
