PrintDARLINGTON, S.C. (AP)â€"NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield has been suspended indefinitely after failing a random drug test.

The result stems from a test last weekend at Richmond International Raceway.

NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter will not reveal what banned drug Mayfield used. Hunter said it was not an alcohol-related offense.

Mayfield failed to qualify for Saturday night’s Sprint Cup race at Darlington Speedway.

He is driving this season in a car he owns himself. Although he raced it into the season-opening Daytona 500, he has failed to qualify for six of the 11 other Sprint Cup events this season.

Mayfield is the first driver suspended under NASCAR’s improved substance abuse policy, which went into effect this season.

Just wondering if this is a policy that really needs to be in effect. It seems weird to me that you can be suspended for failing a drug test. Especially in a "sport" where your driving a car. As long as your not on it during the race, why's it matter. This is not something that is like Baseball, Hockey, Basketball or Football. This is a "sport" where you sit in a car and try to drive fast.

You need steroids to turn left?

(and Hondo kills me.)

Actually there's several different drugs that can effect a person's vision, and that could possibly have been what it was.

Yeah but to the point of cheating though?

Rebel Child

It doesn't say he was cheating.  JUst said that they were doing a drug test.

In the military it is against regulations to take Viagra or anything of tha tnature 72 hours prior to flying, becaus eit can mess with vision.

Are they cheating, trying to fly better by taking it?  No.

Is it still just as dangerous? Yes.

jagilki

You're ruining my baiting of Hondage with logic.

Stop that.

But Nascar isn't a sport.

What's funny is Nascar is a sport, bowling is a sport, spelling bees are on sports channels so that must make it a sport. But wrestling is entertainment.

A thousand apologies for the thread bump, but I just saw this.

First...I'm positive Jag is a closet NASCAR fan. I can sense it. ;)

Anyhoo, Mayfield tested positive for meth. Yes, THAT meth. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't wanna drive anywhere near a guy who is cranked out on meth.

And plus, this whole thing is turning into a bad episode of Melrose Place (or Jerry Springer, all depending on where your views on racing lie). Here's a basic timeline:

---

*NASCAR suspends Mayfield for testing positive for an unnamed drug. Mayfield denies it, saying a combination of Claritin and his ADD medicine (I wish I had a joke for that) caused a false positive.

*NASCAR releases a statement saying it's impossible for those two drugs to cause a false positive.

*Mayfield fires back at NASCAR, saying that since Claritin is a sponsor of one of NASCAR's biggest stars (Carl Edwards), they won't admit that it's possible.

*Information is "leaked" stating that Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamines. Mayfield denies once again, also stating that NASCAR is making an example out of him. He agrees to another series of drug tests, one issued by NASCAR and another by his legal team.

*A federal judge temporarily lifts the suspension of Mayfield so that he can return to the track pending the case. He claims it would be detriment financially to miss the next race at Daytona.

*Mayfield no-shows the Daytona event.

*Mayfield tests positive for a second time for meth (the NASCAR test).

*Mayfield's stepmother issues a sworn affidavit saying she witnessed him used meth at least 30 times, including once before a race. She also claims he manufactured the drug himself until it was harder to get the necessary ingredients (pseudophedrine).

*Mayfield tells the media his stepmother is a "liar", a "whore" and a "bitch" (pardon my language) and that she is angry that he cut her off financially years ago. He also goes on to say that she was responsible for the shooting death of his father and promises to file a Wrongful Death suit against her.

---

Also, this isn't the first time a driver has been suspended for drug-related inquisitions. Shane Hmiel is suspended for life after failing three drug tests. It isn't confirmed what drugs he was taking, but the popular consensus is marijuana and cocaine. Kevin Grubb was also suspended for life (again, no drug ever was revealed), but later committed suicide. Aaron Fike was arrested and suspended by NASCAR in an amusement park parking lot whilst shooting up heroin. He later admitted to taking heroin before races. Former driver Mike Skinner's son Jamie was suspended after it was revealed that he was using his race car and car hauler in an elaborate marijuana smuggling operation. (Insert Dukes of Hazzard joke here)

calvin

its no wonder the guy can't qualify for a race anymore

Demonology

1. As a Nascar fan, I feel the need to point out that yes Nascar is a sport and yes you have to be at least somewhat athletic to drive a Nascar stock car. Driving in the intense heat that builds up inside those cars (150+ degrees) for 3 hours or more takes a toll on you.

2. It does matter that a professional Nascar driver is taking ILLEGAL drugs. A) It's dangerous and he could kill somebody. B) It's illegal, and as a professional public sport Nascar cannot have their drivers taking part in illegal activities. Just as Baseball, Football, Hocky, and Basketball are cracking down on their athletes.

Now I'm not gonna judge whether Mayfield is guilty or not, but if you fail a drug test (Not once but twice) Well, you do the time and move on. Thats the law.

Okay, I've said my peace. lol

Hondo

Well THANK GOD! Another NASCAR fan!

Now I don't feel so lonely...
