What is League of Legends?

After centuries of conflict and hardship across the lands of Valoran, the Rune Wars have finally come to an end. Treaties have been signed, and the superpowers that once ravaged this land have turned to a new role. Realizing that there must be a better way to settle their differences, they created the Institute of War, a multinational governing body that would settle all disputes. Inside the Institute is the League of Legends, where powerful magic users and delegates from each of the realms vie with or against each other to rule the land.
League of Legends is a competitive online game set in an imaginative world. Gamers take the role of a powerful summoner, calling forth and controlling brave champions in battle. League of Legends combines the best elements of session-based games with persistent elements of MMORPG's. Enter the Fields of Justice with your most trusted allies as you fight for your right to rule the world of Valoran. There is only one rule of law among those in the League: Winner takes all.

Is League of Legends Session Based or a Persistant World?

League of Legends bring you the best of both worlds: Intense, fast-paced, strategic, session-based battles accompanied by the persistent element of a summoner that you are constantly leveling and growing in power. In League of Legends, persistent game elements interact and influence session-based play in a dynamic way unlike any other game.

How many Champions will League of Legends have?

League of Legends will have dozens of champions. We are continually developing new champions to add to the game that will have their chance to fight for supremacy in the battle arena. Through our Suggestion Engine we will open our doors to all community members, giving everyone a voice in deciding which new champions are created!

Is League of Legends an MMORPG?

League of Legends is not an MMORPG. However, League of Legends will have a persistent game element that is in the spirit of an MMORPG. That is to say, while a large aspect of the game will be session-based battles; there will also be persistent elements, such as the summoner that exist continuously throughout the game. We will also offer very powerful in-game guild support. Additionally, we will have robust, ongoing community management and support. Are there classes in League of Legends?

League of Legends does not have different classes. However, summoners have mastery trees and other customization choices that allow for a wide range of strategic options. Additionally, champions each have uniquely crafted abilities designed for specific purposes within session play.

Is there crafting in League of Legends?

There is no crafting in League of Legends, but players are able to form powerful items by forging together two or more basic items on the battlefield.

Is League of Legends an RTS?

League of Legends is not an RTS. However, League of Legends will allow players to engage in short, session-based battles in the spirit of your favorite RTS games. League of Legends will also feature robust multiplayer features such as intelligent matchmaking, tournaments, ladders, and other forms of competitive teamplay.

Will League of Legends be released in multiple countries?

League of Legends will be simultaneously released in North America and Europe. We plan on having language and community support in multiple regions.

How can I get involved with the League of Legends community?

The community will play a fundamental role in the development of League of Legends. As a member of the League of Legends community, you will have an unprecedented voice in what new game features are created and implemented. As you are probably aware, we have been targeting the beginning of Season One as the beginning of a long future for competitive League of Legends. As the preseason is coming to a close, we wanted to take a moment to share with you the competitive features that you have to look forward to. Hopefully you’ve been spending this time leveling up, accumulating IP, and building relationships with other League of Legends players, because Season One is sure to test your mettle out there on the Fields of Justice. The features marked by the launch of Season One will serve as the cornerstone of our competitive efforts now and into the future.

    * Ranked Games - Once Season One begins, summoners of Level 20 or above will be able to indulge in our ranked game system. At launch, ranked players will be able to join one of three queues: 3v3 Premade, 5v5 Premade, or 5v5 Solo. Players will receive an individual rating for each of these queues.

    * Ladders - Once Ranked Play begins, players who choose to participate will have their Elo ratings displayed publicly on the League of Legends Ladder. On the ladder, players will be able to see just how they stack up against the rest of their fellow summoners. The ladder will be available on the League of Legends Community Site.

    * Draft Mode - Champion selection during ranked play will take on the form of a live draft. In 5v5 premade and 3v3 premade, the first phase of this draft process will provide the inviter of each team with the opportunity to ban the use of two champions. Banned champions cannot be selected for use on either team, so choose wisely!

      After bans have been dispensed by both sides, the teams will begin the draft process. During ranked play, draft picks will be exclusive, meaning that a drafted champion will not be available for play by the opposing team. The team who received the second ban will begin the drafting process by drafting a single champion. Following that, the game will follow a 1:2:2:2:2:1 draft format for the 5v5 brackets and a 1:2:2:1 format for the 3v3 bracket.

      Through this system, we hope to encourage players to embrace a wider range of champions, allow for teams to effectively counter popular strategies, and develop a familiarity with their opponents and counter accordingly. Initially Draft Mode will be available both in Ranked Play and in practice games. Casual games still utilize blind pick during champion selection.


    * Improved Visual Styles - Since our launch back in October of 2009, our UI Team has been hard at work improving the visual components of the PvP.net interface. With the substantial renovations required to support Ranked Games, now seemed like the opportune time to give the game a facelift. We wanted the new look for League of Legends to be brighter, more visually appealing, and easier to use. I could elaborate further, but I think that once you get a look at the accompanying screenshots their work will stand on its own.
