Title: Showtime & HBO Charging $90 For Mayweather-Pacquiao PPV
Post by: Fnord on April 03, 2015, 12:07:05 PM
Boxing fans — and maybe even casual sports fans — have been waiting years for Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao to face off in the ring. Now the fight that's likely to obliterate all revenue records is happening, and archrival premium cablers HBO and Showtime are teaming up on the May 2 PPV telecast. That's because Mayweather has an exclusive six-fight deal with Showtime and Pacquiao has a contract with HBO. This will mark only the second time the premium nets have worked together on a PPV bout. The other was in 2002 when then-heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis, who had an exclusive deal with HBO, knocked out ex-champ Mike Tyson, who was with Showtime.

While Mayweather and Pacquiao circled each other in recent weeks, HBO and Showtime have been in talks about how to make it work on PPV. Reports say the fight could cost a record 89.95 to buy, and another 10 bucks for HD. Mayweather, who will put his undefeated record on the line in a welterweight championship unification match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is said to be getting a 60-40 split on the purse. No word on what that means for the HBO-Showtime deal, but the latter scored the all-time PPV revenue record of 152 million for its 2013 junior middleweight title fight between Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez. Mayweather also was involved in the bout that earned the most pay-per-views buys: 2.4 million for his 2007 win over an aging Oscar De La Hoya.

The PPV price point officially has been set at $89.95 — the highest ever. And it's up to the provider whether they want to bleed fans for another $10 to get hi-def. That $89.95 is 40% more than the previous PPV high-water mark of $64.95 for Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s fight against Canelo Alverez in September 2013 and the undefeated champ's two subsequent bouts against Marcos Maidana. Bottom line: If you buy the fight, make sure your freeloader buddies bring more than an open bag of Doritos.

Surprised no one else has gotten hyped for this, guess its the state of boxing.

Im going to a WWE Live event saturday then heading to the nearest bar to check this out.

I'd rather Manny win because Floyd is the worst, but if I had to place a bet it'd be on Money. Manny has declined, he's stayed solid.

This is the only thing we've talked about in the office for the last two weeks.  Three big boxing fans and we all can't wait for it.

£20 in the UK on PPV is certainly a lot better value than the $99 you guys in the States have to pay.

I'll be ordering it tonight.  Can't wait!

You can get 6-1 on Mayweather by stoppage too.  I really hope Manny wins though.  Head says Mayweather on points by dancing away for the fight and just point scoring with pot shots from distance like his last 20 odd fights!

Manny is either gonna go all out attack - at which point the fight is all Mayweathers - or he's gonna be canny and cagey. This'll lead to a slow, possibly even boring fight, but is Manny's best chance. I reckon this fight will go the distance.

Fuck it, I stuck £10 on Manny to win inside the distance.  I know it won't happen, but we can live in hope!  Plus I'm up over £100 from UFC accumulators the last two weeks, so I can afford a punt on this one.

Floyd showed why he's the best boxer in the world tonight. I had money on a couple knockouts 'cause the payout was good on them but hedged a cover on just a flat Mayweather win.

FotN goes to Vasyl Lomachenko's. He should be getting consideration as top 10 P4P and that's only after four pro fights. He's that damn good (and also has the amateur record to back it up).

Pacquiao was more to blame than Mayweather. Charging straight ahead at the greatest defensive boxer in the world today isn't going to cut it. He needed to go full on assault to win and the fight suffered because he didn't go that route.

However there was this gem from the fight. Pacquiao nailing Mayweather with a flurry and then Floyd responding by shaking his head and saying "Nope," lol.

If you all were seriously expecting an exciting fight... Then I'm not sure what to tell you. The excitement wasn't the fight, it was the 5 years everyone had to wait to see it play out. Most boxing experts knew this was the style of fight you would see. It's not that surprising. It's what Mayweather does and does it better then anyone in the world.

Fact is, the next time Mayweather fights. Those of you that complain of him being boring will tune in again.

not going to take anything away for money , he won the fight .  good  for him .  but like I said  I was not impress by him and Pac man should have done more .

Yep, Mayweather is the Chelsea of boxing.  When it matters most he's boringly efficient and almost impossible to breakdown, but most importantly - a winner.

If you're a boxing purist and enjoy the art of not getting hit and countering, then Mayweather is a joy to watch.

If you're a casaul fan looking for a Rocky style blood and guts tear up, he's terrible to watch.

Personally I enjoyed it for about 5 rounds until it became obvious Manny couldn't land a clean shot and couldn't get him in the corner or against the ropes enough.  Shoulder injury aside, Mayweather was just too skillful, too quick and too big.

Like Justin said, he's a boxer, not a fighter and there's a big difference between the two.

Early reports indicate the PPV buys are surging past 4 million.  So at the end of the day, none of the complaints or whatever mean anything.  People were interested, people paid big money to watch.  Job done.
