How can I do a back up via Windows Vista to a pendrive, cd, or external hard drive? and can I set it to automatically back up at a certain time of day?

Depends on what kind of external drive you get. Maxtor One Touch allows to to set the things you want backed up, along with a set schedule for when to backup. If you knwo what kind of drive you have, or are going to use, I'll be able to tell you more.

Vista has a functional, but bare bones built in backup.  You can schedule it to do full or incremental backups on your drive of choice.  It's there and it works, but it might not be the best solution.

If you buy an external drive, definitely use the solution that came with that.  normally it's just push a button and it makes a 1:1 copy of the file.
