HOW WE GOT HERE:
The year was 1985. The territory system was thriving, but one man looked to change all that. He wanted to create a truly national company, one that would tour the entire country, and eventually the world. He took all of his money, and he lured all the best talent to his company, and bet the house on one event. The show of shows. WrestleMania. It would either launch wrestling to the highest of heights, or it would bankrupt him and his company.
The show bombed.
To make a long story short, contracts weren't honored, feelings were hurt, and wrestling remained a niche, territorial sport for years to come. Early in the new century, a newfound interest in the sport of pro wrestling by the mass media and casual fan brought the sport back to the forefront. Ratings were up for all of the major territories, buildings were sold out, and people were happy.
Except for Mike Powers.
Mike had a similar dream to the one held by a different man so long ago. To make wrestling a national sport, on par with baseball or football. He didn't dare try and form a national company....the market proved that to be a disaster long ago. But forming a
league.....well, that was something new and different. He convinced 10 investors to bankroll their own teams, and soon Team Combat Wrestling was born!
