Was WWE Right In Trying To Do This With Lex Luger?

Remember when Hulk Hogan left the WWE and eventually ended up going to WCW and WWE took Lex Luger who up until that point had been an arrogant and conceded heel and turned him baby face with the American Patriot gimmick where he began wearing American Flag ring trunks and feuding with foreign heels in his pursuit of the WWE championship? It was almost as though they were trying to make him into the next Hulk Hogan or at the very least a suitable replacement for Hogan. But it wouldn't be long until Luger himself jumped ship to WCW and left the Patriotic gimmick behind instead once more returning to one of his more traditional and naturally fitting gimmicks. The somewhat conceded athlete that was sort of the same regardless of his alignment aside from who he feuded with and tactics he would resort to. Was WWE wise in trying to have Luger take Hogan's place or was it just a bad idea all around?

The odd thing was Luger never actually won the WWE title he got a couple of shots at it I believe but always came up short. I can't even remember him having gold in the WWE as an Intercontinental or tag team champion either.

Of course that was the plan. But he never really got over and wasn't particularly popular backstage. So the whole thing was scrapped and Bret Hart started getting the babyface push instead.

Was the WWF right in trying it? Sure they were! Their job is to sell tickets and PPV buyrates and make money. To do that, you need to build stars. Some work out, others don't.
