I'm enjoying it waaaaaaaay more than I did Oblivion.

and more than I did Morrowind, and Morrowind was one of my faves.

Although it's another game I can see as Your Mileage may Vary.

I noticed you were playing this the other night.

MUCH better than Oblivian.  I have a wizard that will burn your face off and working on a heavy armor 2 hand weapon ass whooper.  Now I have a few videos of my own to post Skyrim related.

I'm getting this for Xmas.  I was under the assumption a Skyrim was something to do with the mile high club.  What a let down it was when I found out I'm getting a game...

Still, it looks good and I'm a sucker for hype so I'm quite looking forward to being utterly shit at this, as I am with most computer games!

Peace

Waiting for the obligatory Bethesda Game of the Year edition before I buy this.

... maybe I'll have actually gotten round to completing Oblivion by then.

Not yet.  I'm not very far in the main story, joined the Stormcloaks Did the Wizard School (or whatever you want to call it) and a bunch of random stuff.  Mostly just running around being ADD.

I have beat the main story, the Stormcloak rebellion, The Companions, the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild quests(including all of the city influence quests to become Guild Leader).

Its a decent game.

I've found with a new character that doing enough of the main quests so that dragons start to show up and attack you randomly you can get enough money(via dragon bones and scales) to support you pretty damn decently no matter what you do.  My first character always seemed broke for whatever reason, but my newer characters seem to have 10k+ on them almost all the time.

Got it for Xmas... When travelling to clear out a fort to join Imperials I saw another dragon but I could kill it... It basically saved my life and then flew off. And it was night time so it took me a few seconds to realise it actually was a dragon.

Aside from that really enjoying the game! First char is a Wood Elf called Bladderbash who likes to use bows and arrows (Not unlike my WoW Night elf hunter called bladderbash ;))

I've never played any Elder Scrolls but loving this one Jack. I must have played it for about 10/15 hours since Thursday when it arrived and I've only done maybe 2 of the main story missions, too busy joining random cults, assassinating people and randomly using flame and shock spells to destroy anything I can. Totally worth  $40 I'd say!

After playing the DLC:

Dawnguard-

Adds some new armor and weapons.  I haven't gotten to do a whole lot in this one since to complete it you have to do part of a Main Questline that I found really tedious the first time around and haven't assed myself into doing it again.  You DO get the ability to summon another dragon though, this one a zombie dragon from the netherrealm.  Also adds a skill tree for being a werewolf(so extra incentive to do that) and makes being a Vampire cooler(also with its own skill tree) as well.

Hearthfire -

I gotta admit, I'm a sucker for customization.  And roleplaying in video games.  So this one was a hit for me.  Adds incentive to have a wife(I went with the werewolf chick from the companions) and gives the ability to adopt children.  The big thing though is the houses.  Its not QUITE as customizable as I was hoping, but its still pretty damn cool.

Dragonborn -

I've really only started this one.  You go to an island off of Morrowind, so its cool getting to see new landscapes after looking at so much grey and white in Skyrim.  Some tough enemies(including a guy who one-hitted my orc that is the leader of the companions, mage guild, thieves guild and dark brotherhood) but lots of new armor and weapons.  I got excited when I picked up some spears, but they are spears for midgets and are just arrows for the player.  Supposed to be some bad ass stuff in it though.

If its been a while since you've played, you should grab some of the DLC and take a whack at it.

Oblivion is quite good but not as good as Skyrim. It's worth playing in my opinion but you're not losing anything story wise in not playing Oblivion first. It also has a few levelling scaling problems (if you're not careful you can level all none combat abilities and wind up too weak in fights). It's decent and immersive though and I played it for hours so I would say it's worth getting on the cheap.

Morrowind I've heard great things about and seems decent for the cameo I've played of it. Depends if you're interested in hooking it up with mods, since I know there are a TON for Morrowind.

I kinda feel the opposite about Oblivion being worse than Skyrim.  I had a lot of fun with Skyrim, don't get me wrong, but after a year and a half I can't seem to get back into it.  The main reason being because there is no incentive to starting a new character, because you can dominate everything with one character.  They even set it up now so you can take away perks you don't want anymore and put them elsewhere at the cost of a few Dragon Souls.

I had a lot more fun doing the quests in Oblivion.

The gameplay of Skyrim is better, but the experience of Oblivion was more fun for me.

The one thing I really preferred about Morrowind, and that I don't know why they stopped doing, is that you can't do all of the guilds with one character.  And in fact can't advance in the guilds unless certain stats are high enough to allow you to do so.  It just feels kinda odd to be the Grand Poobah  of the Mage's College in Winterhold when I don't have a single magic stat above 20.

So, first time playing any sort of Oblivion esk game, and I must say, this is much harder than Fallout NV (which I wasn't expecting). I'm playing on the hardest difficulty as I always do, was there any tips you guys can share? I was just doing my first quest and got ambushed by some guys and died! lol.

Any/all advice is welcome :D

The number one thing I can say is to decide what you want to do as far as combat goes, and min-max that as early as you can.  If the plan is to go mage, make sure to pic a race that emphasizes that, same for the others.  Its possible to be any kind of class as any kind of race, but if you're playing on hardest difficulty you'll want to specialize.

The big thing is that in Fallout you gain XP like any other game, killing everything you see.  In Elder Scrolls games, it doesn't work like that.  You get levels by using your skills.  So the more you use magic, your various magic stats will go up depending on what spells you use.

Since you're posting in this thread, I assume you're playing Skyrim.  When you first get out of the tutorial area where the dragon is burning the city, follow the dude that escapes with you to that first city.  He can tank for you in combat a little.  It might also benefit you to be in stealth mode a lot since its one of the most overpowered skills in Skyrim.

If you go the mage route, don't rely on your Destruction magic too terribly much.  Later in the game the Destruction Magic doesn't scale as well as the other combat skills.  You'll be able to do more damage with a well enchanted/refined weapon than you would with higher level Destruction magic.  Early in the game its fine, but later on you'll find yourself wishing you had invested in some of the other skills instead.

If you find enchanted equipment, always pick it up.  It sells better than other equipment but more importantly you can disenchant it(usually).  Doing that allows you to add that enchantment to equipment in the future.  Grab all of the Soul Stones you find as well.  And enchant EVERYTHING before you sell it.  Only use the weak Soul Stones to enchant things you intend to sell, and save the better ones(Grand and Black Soul Stones) for the things you intend on actually using.

Even if you don't plan on doing the main storyline, do it at least up until you meet the Greybeards.  They teach you some good Shouts and its required to do one of the DLCs anyway.

Kinda like how Fallout 4 wraps up the storylines but you can still play afterwards?
