Title: Euro 2016 Discussion
Post by: Cory on June 10, 2016, 03:50:29 PM
All talk about the tournament can go here.

First half between France and Romania done, and man France should be up 3-1 at this point.

A good opening weekend of games.  Some great goals - Payet for France and Modric for Croatia will be contenders for goals of the tournament.

England played really well for the first half against Russia, then Englanded it up again.  With so many Spurs players in the team it's no surprise they choked.  Still, was a cruel way to concede that late on - but the game should've been long over by then.  Sterling is quick but has no end product and gives the ball away way too much.  Rooney and Dier look like a good midfield pairing.  Not sure what happened to Kane and Vardy should've been on with 20-25 mins to go.

Wales deserved their win and the game against England is now going to be a must see.

Germany looked solid but missing a main striker - Gotze looked so out of place up front by himself.

Northern Ireland v Poland was so boring I fell asleep.

Looking forward to the games today - first chance to see Spain and Republic v Sweden should be good.  Belgium v Italy could be great or they could cancel each other out.

It's just been a pity the behaviour of the fans off the pitch hasn't matched the quality on it.  The security for England v Russia in and around the stadium sounds like it was terribly planned and executed.  Plus there's been fighting with other groups of fans too.  Hoped those kind of mouth breathing morons had been left in the 80s but looks like they're back.  Sadly.

Still, it's been a good first weekend!  Here's hoping for more good games and less idiots cause trouble.

Ugh, that Spain game put me to sleep. Hopefully the Irish and Zlatan will put on a show in a few minutes and then Italy/Belgium being the first big blockbuster game of the tournament.

Italy looked great last night.  Belgium totally not the sum of their parts.  So much talent but they just don't work hard enough as a team to get results.

Looking forward to the preening Ronaldo making his first appearance - he's the captain of my fantasy footy side!

What a disappointing game Germany Poland was, had high hopes for it.

However all 3 games tomorrow on paper could be great so fingers crossed.

Nice to see Woy not just do the usual thing and not act.  England have got all kinds of attacking flair, good to see it put to use and successfully too.  Hopefully that's Hart got his 'one blunder per tournament' out of his system!

Germany looked totally off the pace last night.  Very boring game.

Hoping tonight and the weekend see things back on a decent level.

Been a fun tournament so far - lots of late, late goals!

As someone who has watched every game, both of Hungary's games have been the most exciting. Love it when a team plays with no real regard, oppose to all of these "powerhouses" trying to pass teams to death and play to not to lose.

I heard a report that England is resting 5 starters....then again Woy hasn't found his best XI so maybe thats a good thing.

Man, I sort of feel for England, but I was rooting hard for Iceland... what a great story!

England needs to find a way to get over the hump, because they've done about as much as the USA in these tournaments... and thats not a good thing.

England keep going for individuals and not team players. They had Rooney playing where Dele Alli should have had and Woy was too stubborn to change the formation so he could sit Sterling and get Vardy meaningful minutes. I think if England lined up: 4-3-3:

Hart (personally I'm higher on Forster than Hart)
Clyne - Shawcross - Smalling - Rose
Dier - Alli - Drinkwater (or Milner)
Vardy - Kane - Sturridge

Cahill, Sterling, Rooney were all poor and Walker is a liability when it comes to defending in crucial moments. England need defend first, attack rarely players on the backline, a Scott Dann or Ryan Shawcross to add some iron back there and needed two midfield generals, someone like Danny Drinkwater to control the middle with Eric Dier who was head and shoulders England's top player this tournament.

I've been saying it for the past 4 years, you put a guy in charge who is known for putting out pretty plain and boring mid table sides, and that's the kind of team he's going to produce.

England were woeful in the second half.  They had no spark after half time, no change in style or formation, nothing that made it look like they were going to take the result away from Iceland.

Same old England in a tournament.  Complete mental block for the players, none of them playing the way they do for their club sides, I've been following England in major tournaments since 1990 and it just doesn't get any better.

And credit to Iceland, they had a plan, they had a style, they worked it to perfection and got the result.

For England, unless they do a massive overhaul of their system to get the national team going (in the same way Spain and Germany did a decade ago) then this will be the type of performance you'll see from England at all the major tournaments.  So disheartening and disappointing.

On the other side of things, Belgium finally turned up and looked fantastic.  Hazard back to his very best.

Italy are my favourite side of the tournament.  Well organised, better than the sum of their parts and playing with amazing team spirit.  I hope they win the whole thing!

But yeah, same old England...and it doesn't get any easier to watch or accept.

Semi-final will be tough without Ramsey, but Portugal have not been too impressive so far. I could see Iceland doing to France what they did to England, but they will struggle tactically against the Germans or Italy.

So we've got our final.  I'm pulling for France in this one.

Cory - looks like our predictions are still on with Griezman as top scorer!

I was in the Paris fan park for the France v Ireland game. Atmosphere was unreal.

Can't see many neutrals supporting Portugal for this one. I'm certainly not!

Ronaldo goes off in like the 16th minute with an apparent knee injury...

They tape him up and he comes back on in the 21st minute.

Tons of guts in that kid.

Clutches his knee again in the 24th minute...

He's coming off with a stretcher. He's done.

Man, I feel terrible for him and Portugal.

Incredible final match.

Near misses, hit posts, great saves, devastating injury...

And in the end..

Portugal with a huge upset and claims their first major championship in their countries history.
