Is the length of time voting is open for still 5 days? That could be too long. Maybe evaluate after the preliminaries?
Title: Re: MFX: Contest of Champions Discussion Thread

Yeah I'll reevaluate after this first batch of fights. 3 might be better. But it takes a while just to set them up so the 5 days might be good simply for my mental health lol. Later rounds can definitely be shorter as I'll have all the info written up.

Looks like we've got about 10 votes on each poll and haven't seen new ones in a while. Think this has been enough time?

Polls close today around 5-730 p.m. It looks like. Get any last minute votes or discussion in now! New round will probably start tomorrow as I'll be getting hammed up tonight.

Polls have closed. You can see results in each thread right now, but I'll update this initial post after work tonight before putting up the second round. None of the first round were very close, though I thought a couple of them would be.

Poor Jonah Hex.

I forgot to mention that I bumped the deadline down to 4 days this time. The polls will close around 7 this afternoon. So tell your friends and shit. We've got 4 votes less than the first wave right now.

Plus, we've still got a tie, so need at least on more voter pweeze.

Well, before we move onto the next wave, what do you guys think we should do about the tie?
Title: Re: MFX: Contest of Champions Discussion Thread
Post by: Tritch on October 19, 2016, 01:43:35 PM
I'm voting in the polls though so I don't think I should be the tie breaker.

I'm leaning towards just redoing it in the next wave, so moving onto the next 9 but re-doing Nightwing v Green Lantern as a 10th fight as I release that wave.
Title: Re: MFX: Contest of Champions Discussion Thread
Post by: Tritch on October 19, 2016, 08:26:44 PM
Results up above are updated.

Wave 3 of the Preliminaries is now underway.

Round 2 for Nightwing vs Green Lantern (John Stewart) is also reopened with some good discussion already, be sure to participate in that as well!

I'd love to see more discussion going on in the fights. I might be posting my own analysis in the next couple of days to try to get it jumpstarted.

I went back up to 5 days for this wave as we had less activity last this last wave.

Fights 19 through 27 end tonight, so get your last minute votes in while you can! The final wave of the preliminaries will kick off shortly after. Sticking with the 5-day cycle as that seems to work best.

Okay, deadline at work has come and gone. I have gotten all the bios finished for the next wave, and we're all ready to post the final set from the preliminaries. Will get the next round out tonight when I get home.

Apologies again for the delay.

Results from the last wave as well as bracket for the next wave have been updated in initial post.

Opening post updated with full Preliminaries results, and the first wave of Round 1 is listed.

With the recent site migration, I don't want to start polls for the next round until I know at least a few of the regulars are around to vote for them.

After 5 people check in here in this thread I'll get the next wave of polls posted.

Okay updated with last round's results/next round's match-ups. Couple of exciting ones imo.

Have to write the profiles for the ones who haven't appeared yet unfortunately, thought I had worked ahead but guess I didn't. Will try to get to it this weekend, but I'm fairly busy with holiday parties and shit so I might not get to it until Monday night.

Updated with the last wave's results and the next wave's matches.

We had a whopping 3 ties of 4-4 votes, so those 3 match-ups have had a "Round 2" poll posted. The rest of the next wave's matches will be posted tonight or tomorrow.

Updated with results from the last wave and match ups from the final Round 1 wave - which includes a couple of fun ones. Speaking of fun ones, looking at the layout of Round 2 so far... there are some pretty damn good fights forthcoming.

I'll try to get up this last wave ASAP. This is the last time I have to write up character sheets, so everything after this should go pretty quick and smoothly.

Spread the word so we can get our numbers back up. 8 is plenty but it'd be cool to get a bigger turnout and have more opinions discussed in the threads, especially as we move deeper into the tournament.

Sorry about how slowly we've been moving so far, the holidays was a bad time to start this. Hopefully everyone is having fun regardless.

Alright got the last tight in Round 1 squared away. Round 2 starts now, with the first half of matches already open. The rest of the tournament should run more smoothly now. But let's get some more discussion and votes going! Tell your fiends :)
Title: Re: MFX: Contest of Champions Discussion Thread

Okay, the first wave of Round 2 has been updated with winners - and the one draw. Plus, the second wave of Round 2 has been listed.

The polls have been opened as well. Please note that all of the current matches have been shortened to 3 days, as it seems like we're not going to get more than 8 votes and those 8 votes are coming within the first 3 days. Note: the draw from the last wave is still 5 days as I forgot I was going to change it before I created the poll.

Let's get some more discussion going, there are some pretty damn good fights going on now.
Title: Re: MFX: Contest of Champions Discussion Thread

So we've already got 8 votes on each of these fights. Should I close them and move to the next round, or wait a couple days to see if anyone else decides to jump in? We haven't had more than 8 since the first wave of the Round 1, and it was only 9. We did have 10-12 a few times in the prelims though.

Okay there's been no change since my last post, so I went ahead and locked voting and made the results visible. Results updated in the initial post here, as well as all of the fights in Round 3. Expect the new polls to be posted later today, and I'll probably give them a 2-day time frame unless anyone objects beforehand.

Update with Round 3 Results & Round 4 Match-ups.

Round 4 polls coming later today. Will move them up to 5 days. 2 days seemed a little rushed, plus I feel like many people aren't as active over the weekend (or maybe that's just me, idk.) Either way, 5 days this round to start with. If activity seems stagnant by Monday afternoon I'll close 'em early but let's expect Wednesday as a close date for now.

@Jack - I guess the Flash's powers aren't the best haha

Yeah I'm currently working on the profiles for the comic villains tourney, will run that one next. I'll think about a way to incentivize people to write opinions but I'm not sure anything will work. Activity has picked up lately at least!

Closed up the quarterfinals. Great discussion! Just because the fights over doesn't mean the discussion has to stop either if you disagreed with something. Regardless, we have our final four, and it's certainly not what I would've expected heading in!

Ghost Rider
Iron Man
Hulk
Thor

Let's go!
Title: Re: MFX: Contest of Champions Discussion Thread
Post by: Tritch on February 13, 2017, 04:05:33 PM
Since there's only 2 fights this round, I thought we could spark a little discussion in here as well in addition to the fight discussion.

Take a look at the whole field of 100.

- Heading in, who were your final four (feel free to disregard the bracket for this question)?
- And your winner?
- Which fight was the biggest upset in your opinion?
- Which fight did you assume would go a different way, but it ended up going the way you wanted in the end?
- In your opinion, is anyone missing from IGN's Top 100 Comic Book Heroes? Perhaps just someone they didn't include on the list, or maybe even someone who wasn't around back then?
Title: Re: MFX: Contest of Champions Discussion Thread
Post by: Tritch on February 13, 2017, 04:19:14 PM
1 - Martian Manhunter, Silver Surfer, The Flash (Barry Allen), Hulk

2 - Martian Manhunter - I think he's a super underrated character, and I'm glad he's getting some shine in Supergirl.

3 - I definitely think Daredevil should've beaten Spider-Man, but I don't think it was necessarily I big upset. That was a very close fight. Same with The Flash (BA) vs Hulk and Thor vs Martian Manhunter in my opinion. But I think perhaps the biggest upset, and I know I'll be alone in this, was Luke Cage beating John Constantine. Cage is strong sure, but there's a lot more to winning fights like these than just being strong, and Constantine has that a lot more. But this is probably just an example of bias because I love Constantine lol.

4 - I thought for sure Superman was going to go all the way and win it, so I was pretty surprised that Thor beat him 7-2. I love Superman, and generally the conversations about him being boring because of how overpowered he is annoy me because that's the way he's supposed to be. But as the person running this thing, I didn't want to see him win because it would've been too predictable lol. So as surprising as the final four is, I'm pretty happy about it.

5 - I was pretty surprised at the lack of Captain/Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers). I'm pretty sure she's one of the strongest characters in the comics right now, I think she even took over Captain America's spot in Civil War 2 against Tony (don't quote me on that, I'm not up to CW2 yet - no spoilers please lol). Plus she's been around forever, so there's no reason she shouldn't have been on the editors' minds.

My predicted final four would have been Superman, Hulk, Batman (Via popularity power and memetic mutation) and either Flash or Professor X. With Superman winning because he's Superman

My biggest upset was the Thing beating the spectre. Spectre is a fucking GOD TIER character. By rights a character of his powerlevel should have wiped the floor with the ever-lovin' bulue-eyed rockman.

Ghost Rider going over Batman was a pleasant surprise. Thought Bats would take it home (because he's Batman).

Kinda surprised at no Rogue (thought she'd have gotten a nostalgia vote from the 90's toon), no Tim Drake as Robin and no Midnighter (he's a niche title character sure - but so are Yorrick Brown, Spider Jerusalem & Mitchell Hundred and they made it in).

Tim Drake was present, he lost to Superman in the preliminaries. But I agree about Rogue!

Jessica Jones is another one. Obviously she's increased in popularity as of late due to Netflix, but I feel like Alias was super popular when it came out. Though I could be wrong.

Really? I must have missed him when I was looking through the rounds summary.

Although now that I think about it, for much the same reason that Rogue got missed out, kinda surprised that none of the other animated-titans (Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy or Cyborg) made the cut. Or Kyle Rayner for that matter.

- Heading in, who were your final four (feel free to disregard the bracket for this question)?
Silver Surfer
Dream of the Endless
The Spectre
Superman

In terms of powerset, the first 3 are untouchable by anybody else on this list. Dream is a fabric of the universe itself. Silver Surfer is empowered by the Power Cosmic - again, part of the fabric of the universe. The Spectre is God-tier but only limited by his inability to harm innocents (he can be tricked though). Would have considered Hulk, Jean Grey, Dr. Strange or Thor in place of Superman, but it's Superman, so I just figured he'd be there.

- And your winner?
Silver Surfer. More well known than Dream or Spectre, but far more powerful than Superman.

- Which fight was the biggest upset in your opinion?
Punisher beating Dream by far stands out to me. Punisher kills people. Dream can't be killed. It's actually impossible for Punisher to win that fight.

Thing over Spectre got mentioned by someone else.

Jean Grey got unlucky with the draw. I know I voted for Thor to beat her, but a better bracket for her and she would have been a finals contender.

Iron Man is an interesting case. He probably should have been beaten by Storm, and I kind of regret going with him over Captain Marvel, but he managed to dodge some of the heaviest hitters (Captain Marvel excluded?) to get to the finals.

Gambit shouldn't have beaten Cyclops, but that's less of a major upset.

Wolverine beating Dr. Strange I think is a push too.

- Which fight did you assume would go a different way, but it ended up going the way you wanted in the end?
Thor beating Superman. Don't get me wrong, Superman is one of my favourite characters, and I voted for Thor, but I didn't actually think Thor was going to get the majority. It wasn't that close either.

Professor X beating Wally West too.

- In your opinion, is anyone missing from IGN's Top 100 Comic Book Heroes? Perhaps just someone they didn't include on the list, or maybe even someone who wasn't around back then?
Dr. Manhatten from the Watchmen. They included Rorschach but I think Manhatten is just as iconic.
Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel is a big miss.
I think if the list was done again nowadays you'd see the Guardians of the Galaxy creep their way in.
Would be interesting if they included Manga as well. Goku would be a sure-fire top 10 (both on the list and in this tournament). Other characters from DBZ, Naruto, etc. would surely crop up too.
I'm guessing characters like Optimus Prime and Buffy the Vampire Slayer aren't included, even though they have comic books, because they were in other media first.

The final could be Iron Man vs Hulk.

We've already used the Hulkbuster argument in other fights, so that's got to be present again right? Could Iron Man win this thing lol?

Potentially. Problem is that the Hulkbuster armour only evens the fight up. There are a number of times that Hulk beat the Hulkbuster armour. There was a Thorbuster suit at one point too. It didn't work. The Phoenixbuster armour only somewhat worked as well.
