So it has been announced that the man brought in to direct the film adaptation of Ernst Cline's ready player one
Is none other the Stephen Spielberg. Love or hate his last few films this is still exciting news since he is such a iconic director so to have him directing shows WB is taking the film seriously. I doubt we will see all the references that are in the book but as long as we get that epic fight scene with all those mechs, Mechagodzilla, Voltron, and Ultraman I will be content

This makes me incredibly happy.

Same here, I was honestly afraid that they would of just bring in some director who more then likely would of just half-assed it or wouldn't give a damn about the source material and what made it special. But Speilberg was a pleasant surprise and fitting in a way given how he was such a iconic 80's film director and the book was essentially a dystopian sci-fi love letter to the 80's and Gamer/Geek/Nerd culture and he strikes me as a man who would treat the film and the source material "seriously".

Plus if anyone can get alot of the bands mentioned in the book to agree to allow them to use their music and can talk many of the rights holders to the many references in the book to agree to allow them to be used in the film, it would be him.  The guy is well respected. Granted some of them like the game Joust and the film Ladyhawke are easy since Warner bros owns the rights to them already(Joust when they acquired Midway Chicago and Warner bros made Ladyhawke) but still as a Kaiju and Tokusatsu geek(plus these are two childhood icons for me) I want my Ultraman vs Mechagodzilla final fight scene damn it, yeah I want to see the other mechs and stuff that were in that battle at the final gate like the Evengelions, the Gundams, the five lions/Voltron, ect. but I can live with them having to change them in the film so long as they have the beta capsule and thus Ultraman and Mechagodzilla and Mechagodzilla looks like his original 1974/Showa era incarnation and not his 90's/Hensi era or his Millenium era desgin aka Kyru as epic as that version looks it still wouldn't be the same as his original design.

Damn straight, as I said I am a huge Kajiu and Tokusatsu geek and Ultraman was a big part of my early childhood as it used to air 6 am followed by Johnny Sokko and his flying Robot, which I still got to get the complete series DVD off that Shout Factory released, was going to get it this week but ended up ordering Super Sentai Zyuranger complete series instead. Got the whole original series of Ultraman on DVD(cost me a whole 15 bucks) and Voltron was also a big part of my childhood as well both the orginal five lion Voltron/Voltron: Defender of the Universe and Voltron Vehicle Force. Seeing that battle on the big screen in all it's glory(pending they can get all the rights to the characters) I think I would probably be able to die a happy man because I could say I saw the greatest thing ever put to the big screen, even if they just get the rights to Mechagodzilla and Ultraman that will work for me because it would be the greatest fight ever the King of the Monsters second greatest foe(first being King Ghidorah) vs Ultraman one of the original Kaiju crushers, given that it would be the closet thing I will ever see to seeing the Orginal Ultraman battling Godzilla, it would just bring me back to being 5 again .

Same with me, I read it at least 4 times already. I just love everything about it, the 80's references, the nods to geek/nerd/gaming culture there was so many times I just sat there reading the book and just smile as I would go "oh that's from Heathers", "Oh man the TRS 80 aka Trash 80, good god that brings back memories, such a POS computer but Dungeons of Daggorath was a damn good game"(it was but it had a few good games namely Temple of Asphati, Dungeons of Daggorath and Madness and the Minatour) or "Oh man the Tomb of horrors, the bane of my earliest D&D experiences" and all that. Hell when Wade talked about how him, Daito and Shoto did that raid that net them the Beta Capsule I couldn't help but start humming the Ultraman theme.. yeah I am pathetic I know. Of course that all would mean shit if the writing wasn't good and the characters compelling and the overall plot kept you invested luckily Ernest Cline was a solid writer.

So yeah I just loved everything about the book.

Dungeon of Daggorath for those who never seen it or played it:
Dungeons of Daggorath (1st level)

Black Death

I just re-read it again for the 6th time ... there a section in the book that makes my laugh so hard and it rings true for me ... I will Spoiler tag it for people who have not read it , for shame you have not read it yet , well worth it
remember the part in act 3 , when he get indented to IOI to get behind there firewall ,  His thoughts on life and how it feels to  working in the tech support center for them , It the same feeling I have working in my job .  It made me laugh so hard ... I get that same feeling after work every day .  man i love this book and can not wait for Cline new book in July
