20th Century Fox recently announced that a sequel to Will Smith's "Independence Day" will hit theaters on July 3rd, 2015, but we never found out whether Smith will actually return to reprise his role.

Now, while promoting his "White House Down" movie, director Roland Emmerich revealed that Smith will not return. "Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive," said the helmer. "But he'd also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much."

But just because Smith's isn't coming back, that doesn't mean we won't see lots of familiar faces in the sequel. "We have like maybe half of the people that you would know from the first film," Emmerich added. "And the other half are people who are new."

Even though it's still early, Bill Pullman already confirmed that he'll return as President Thomas Whitmore.

Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman Confirmed for "Independence Day" Sequel

Director Roland Emmerich is already working on a sequel to "Independence Day," but recently revealed that Will Smith will not be reprising his role, mostly because the actor is too expensive.

Despite the fact that Smith won't be returning, Emmerich said that the sequel will feature many actors from the original film. And now, while speaking at the Apple Store in NYC, the director confirmed that Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman will be back as computer scientist David Levinson and President Whitmore.

"Independence Day 2" is set to hit theaters on July 3rd, 2015.
