Im still a little shocked that this was what blew it up....never once had an issue directly with Lee.

It's probably something that has accrued over time - for instance with the Mays thing, Lee was stated to have lost confidence in you, or something to that effect, and then this has been the straw that broke the camel's back. So it's less that you've had problems with him, more that he's had issues with your running of the team and finally he has no more patience.
