Have you ever considered the possibility that James Bond is very much like The Phantom or any other character that is portrayed by a multitude of people all using the same name to create the illusion that it's simply the same person who refuses to die? So maybe Connery and Brosnan's Bond were not one in the same but rather two very different people born in two different time periods who happened to be given the same identity.

Weren't all of the novels written about the same person though? That would be like saying nancy drew or the hardy boys were different people in each adventure. Why not just write about different characters then? Though I do like the theory tyty posted the link to.

I think there was some sort of conspiracy theory about the Nick Cage/Sean Connery movie "The Rock".  Supposedly, Sean Connery's character was a disavowed James Bond, rotting in that prison.

The same could be said for Sherlock Holmes, but it ain't true. Watson is a girl in one recent adaptation - and that's what it is.

They're just different adaptations of a literary character (the same one), updated and made relevant for the viewing audience of the time.
